No NCAAs his first 6 years, Leonard Hamilton now a 3-Time ACC COY.

The story of Florida State Leonard Hamilton’s season and career is not yet written. The Noles still have plenty of goals ahead of them. Recently @mattzemek  wrote about Hamilton’s place among all-time ACC Coaches.

Leonard Hamilton just became a 3-Time ACC COY at age 71

Hamilton probably shouldn’t even be the head coach of Florida State. His first 6 years at FSU he never made the NCAAs. Then he went from 2013-2016 without making the NCAA Tournament.

He had a lot of critics.

Hamilton has proven them all wrong.

As Zemek said in his article

Hamilton, to his immense credit, is becoming a better and better coach as he gets older (though he looks so much younger than his age). Florida State doesn’t go through prolonged losing streaks anymore. The wheels don’t fall off the wagon the way they did in those painful NIT seasons from the past. Florida State manages tempo better and doesn’t get lost at the offensive end of the floor — not to the same extent it once did.

After his first 6 years, Hamilton is quickly becoming the Frank Beamer of FSU basketball. What if they had given up on him sooner?

It seems unlikely that Florida State could find a coach as successful has Hamilton become in recent years. Perpetually underrated in a league vs Hall of Fame coaches, rising stars like Chris Mack, the best in the country coach in recent years Tony Bennett, Hamilton has held his own.

If he makes the Final 4, he would become the oldest first time Final 4 Coach in history. At least I couldn’t find an older coach.

That would be a truly remarkable accomplishment. I would say a fine way to win a career as well, but Hamilton doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down.
