Good afternoon, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) men’s basketball fans.
I’ll be brief: This year, Jamon Gordon must be inducted into the Virginia Tech Athletics Hall of Fame.
Here are the criteria for the Virginia Tech Athletics Hall of Fame:
Criteria:
- Out of school for 10 years or more;
- Nationally recognized athletic, coaching, or administrative ability;
- Must be of good character and reputation/not have been a source of embarrassment to the university in any way;
- Candidate must have graduated/or not, in good standing/with good graces of university officials;
- Candidate must receive 6 out of 8 votes of the members of the Hall of Fame selection committee;
- The career of the person outside of athletics will not have a bearing on the selection unless that person is otherwise qualified.
From 2003 to 2007, Gordon was a four-year starter for the Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball team. Let’s reel off some of Gordon’s accomplishments (some of these come from @HokiesSports):
- During his time at Virginia Tech, Gordon was an incredibly steady point guard. Most of the time, he had a better than 2:1 assist to turnover ratio.
- In 2004-2005, Gordon was named to the ACC men’s basketball all-defensive team. He led the Hokies in steals and assists.
- In 2005-2006, Gordon led the Hokies in rebounding and assists and was third in scoring
- In 2006-2007, Gordon led the Hokies in steals (he had 94!!!) and assists.
- In 2006-2007, Gordon was named to the ACC all-defensive team – and all-ACC third team. Gordon was named the ACC’s defensive team.
- In 2006-2007, Gordon was a key cog in road victories vs. Duke and UNC on consecutive Saturdays. Virginia Tech defeated North Carolina twice this year.
- Virginia Tech does not have a lot of NCAA tournament success – and the Hokies made it to the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament in 2007. The Hokies defeated Illinois and lost to Southern Illinois that year.
ACC basketball players that competed against Jamon Gordon will tell you that he was a “pain in the @#% gnat” on defense. You could never separate from him or get any space away from him. If Gordon was guarding you, you were going to have a bad night on offense.
Gordon played professional basketball for several years in Europe, including stints in Germany, Croatia, Italy, Turkey, and Greece. He had a very successful career in Europe. He recently retired from professional basketball.
In his personal life, Gordon takes care of the residents in his Jacksonville, FL neighborhood. He hosts annual holiday and neighborhood gatherings – and also helps volunteer coach young players.
This year, Jamon Gordon must be inducted as part of the 2020 Virginia Tech Athletics Alumni Hall of Fame class (this was a hard miss last year – and this induction must happen this year). Unanimously.
