Scott Satterfield for #ACC Football Coach of the Year

Good afternoon, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) football fans.

ACC football end-of-season awards are coming up – and let’s clear:

There is only one answer for ACC football coach of the year – and his name is Scott Satterfield.

I was one of the very first folks out there who said that Louisville should hire Satterfield, BTW.  That was over a year ago.  Even though it’s working out good for North Carolina with Mack Brown right now (he might be runner up for ACC Coach of the Year), I was still shocked at the time that they actively handed Satterfield to Louisville.

In May 2019, our friend, Ethan Moore asked me how long it would take for the University of Louisville to get to a bowl game in the Satterfield era.  (You can follow Ethan on Twitter at @_EthanMoore).  BTW, Ethan is one half of the City of Louisville’s longest running University of Louisville sports talk show with @TaylerLynch on @939TheVille every Wednesday night at 6:00.  Ethan knows his ACC athletics.  He has been on our podcast many times.  I was very clear about this – I mentioned that Louisville fans should be prepared to be patient and that it might take at least two years given the dumpster fire left by Bobby Petrino.   I know many Louisville fans agreed with me.

Let’s be clear when we say this:  Bobby Petrino had an ACC legend on his team in Lamar Jackson.  This guy clearly was one of the best players on the football field any time he played in a game.  With no Jackson on the field anymore, it was clear that Petrino had a bunch of smoke and mirrors on the field.  In short, many weaknesses were exposed in the Louisville football program with the Jackson departure.  Petrino damaged many of the relationships with Kentucky high schools (specifically those in Louisville), as a result, recruiting suffered.   Louisville maybe had one of the absolutely worst ACC football teams in the history of the conference – and that is saying a lot.

Satterfield came in this year and won seven games with all of Petrino’s players.  Louisville was 7-5 overall and 5-3 in the ACC.  Louisville defeated Virginia, the ACC Coastal Division champions.  His teams looked stronger up front on both sides of the ball – and that’s only going to improve when he gets more of his own players in the system.  Bronco Mendenhall deserves credit for breaking the losing streak with Virginia Tech – and getting his Wahoos to the ACC title game.  Additionally, Dabo Swinney is still smoking the rest of the ACC.  However, the rebuild job that Satterfield had (and still has) – is much better than the rest of the conference.

And Louisville is going bowling in the first year of the Satterfield experience.  Are you experienced?  Yes, indeed.  Experienced enough to lose a charity bet lol.
