Florida State has a meltdown against Boise State.

I warned you back in January, that Florida State playing Boise State was a risk not worth taking.  It was a mistake when it was scheduled. It was a mistake when I pointed it out in January and after Boise State beat Florida State 36-31 in a debacle of a 2nd half for the Noles, it could sink the FSU’s season.

You don’t want to make sweeping generalizations after one game, but when you are a mentally fragile team like Florida State a loss like that is going to leave a mark.

In the first half FSU QB, James Blackman was throwing darts. RB Cam Akers had room to operate. New OC Kendal Briles was calling smart game and big plays were occurring everywhere. FSU ran out to a 31-13 lead, and just maybe Florida State would start the season in impressive fashion. Florida State never scored again.

Boise State simply wore Florida State out at the line of scrimmage on both sides. This has to be a big concern for Florida State. Boise State looked better conditioned. As a coach you can only do so much, but your conditioning you can control.

Florida State players were cramping all over the field while Boise State played like it was mid October game. At the end of the day that falls on Willie Taggart.

With a chance to jump start the season, the Nole collapsed in epic fashion. The defense gave up a whopping 621 yards of offense, and looked helpless in the 2nd half. This was against freshman QB Hank Backmeier, who lit up FSU like it was an organized scrimmage.

Boise State looked better conditioned, better coached, and were definitely better prepared coming out for the 2nd half. Florida State fans were semi-forgiving of Taggart after a 5-7 2018, but he’s going to feel big time heat now.

Jimbo Fisher left him a mess, but Taggart needed a win today. This was the worst scenario possible. If Florida State had just got blown out, they could still blame the personnel. In this game Florida State had superior speed, early momentum, and were at home. This game was decided by coaching, execution, and conditioning. Boise State was better in all three phases.

Now Willie Taggart looks at an uncertain future, and has lost 8 of his first 13 games as Florida State head coach. That’s unacceptable in Tallahassee. You don’t write the season off after 1 loss, but Florida State’s back is against the wall and their confidence took a huge hit. Willie Taggart has a lot of work ahead of him, and today was a disaster.
