Virginia doesn’t care about your missed call complaints.

Virginia is playing for the national title after a heart stopping 63-62 win over Auburn Saturday. There was controversy to to finish the game that we will go through, but guess what Virginia doesn’t nor should they care about it. Facing an epic collapse after blowing a late 10 point lead, Virginia made the plays to win the game when the opportunity presented itself and Auburn did not.

Let’s go through the final 10 seconds as Auburn had 61-57 lead.

  1. Kyle Guy nails a three pointer from the corner with 9 seconds let to make it 61-60.
  2. Auburn’s Jared Harper an 81% free throw shooter misses the second of two free throws and the score is 62-60
  3. Ty Jerome hits his foot with the ball, and picks up the ball. That is a double dribble, and was a missed a call by the refs. Auburn does have a gripe there. That said, before the double dribble violation, Brown grabbed a fistful of Jerome jersey.  That is s a foul.
  4. Bryce Brown fouls Jerome as he’s about to heave a desperation 3. It was a mistake of a foul by Brown, as it stopped the clock with 1.5 seconds. Bennett then is able to set up a play.
  5. Kyle Guy is fouled with the body on a 3 point shot by Samir Doughty. I will admit this call is not always made, but if you are asking if it was a foul? There is no question is was. There was contact during the act of shooting that affected Guy’s shot. He’s headed to the line.
  6. Kyle Guy with a national championship on the line and immense pressure nails 3 straight free throws. That’s the epitome of clutch.
  7. Auburn last fleeting shot attempt ends in a miss.

The final 10 seconds had seven separate events. If you want to argue about Jerome and the double dribble, you can. Otherwise Auburn had their chances to close out this game and failed. Virginia had to execute pressure shots and free throws. They did and it won them the game.

Virginia doesn’t have to apologize for anything. They earned their appearance into the national title game controlling what they could control.

How different this story could have been. Up 57-47, Ty Jerome gets called for his 4th foul. The Hoos went into the Deer in Headlights offense as Auburn mounted a fantastic comeback of their own.

Where previous Virginia teams would have lost this game 65-59, this Virginia team just doesn’t die. They were down 14 early to Gardner Webb in their opening tournament game. They won. Oklahoma was probably their most complete tournament, and was never really in doubt. They were in a fist fight with a tough Oregon team and won. They beat the tournament’s hottest offense player Carsen Edwards and Purdue in the Elite 8. That included a last second tying score to force OT. They won today down 4 with less than 10 seconds.

I still don’t think we’ve seen them play as well as they did in the ACC regular season. Kyle Guy was mostly MIA during the NCAAs until the 2nd half of the Purdue game. DeAndre Hunter’s outside shot has left him. In long stretches against Auburn, Virginia’s half court offense looked disjointed. They just keep preserving though, with late game heroics.

It’s might just result in a national title for Virginia.
