NC State has been forced to play their NIT games at Reynolds Coliseum due to the Carolina Hurricane’s games being in conflict. To be honest, Reynolds is the perfect place for NC State to be playing these games. I know many people haven’t been watching these games, because well, it is the NIT and really only the hard core college basketball fans, or the fans of the teams participating will watch these games.
If you haven’t been watching, I have to say the atmosphere is nothing I’ve seen before. The arena is hopping with an energy and the crowd has been into these games.
It has been so electric that there has been chatter on Twitter about moving all of the NC State’s home basketball games from PNC arena to Reynolds. As great as that idea sounds, it is not feasible economically. NC State AD Debbie Yow addressed this and the reasons she gave are inarguable. Let’s look at the 2 biggest issues Dr. Yow brought up. First, the capacity is a huge issue. Reynolds only holds 5500 for basketball. PNC holds 19,722 people for basketball.
NC State has over 10,000 season ticket holders and they set aside 4,000 seats for students. So at a minimum Reynolds is about 9,000 seats short. Second, NC State signed a 99 year lease in 2000. Which means, NC State will be playing games at PNC Arena for the foreseeable future. Reynolds for the NIT though? That’s a match for Kevin Keatts and his team.
