As we heads towards March, ACC schools like Duke and Virginia are the heavy betting favorites to win it all. UNC is charging hard to be a pre-tournament favorite too. Duke, especially might be the odds on favorite if Zion Williamson can get healthy.
There are other schools who are certain to miss the NCAA’s, and that will put some ACC coaches on the hotseat. Lets rank the ACC Coaching Hotseats.
Seat is on FIRE
Danny Manning, Wake Forest – Manning is in so much trouble. Wake Forest blogs are already searching for coaching candidates. He 23-63 in 5 years of ACC play.
Jim Christian, Boston College – Christian’s ACC record is worse than Manning’s 5 years – Christian is 17-69 in ACC Play. Manning at least went to the NCAA’s once. Christian has a NIT first round loss as his best season.
Seat is starting to get HOT
Josh Pastner, Georgia Tech – Is Georgia Tech on probation? Because Pastner is recruiting like they are. The Jackets have made zero progress in Pastner’s 3 years. He’ll get another year, but he’s losing the Jacket’s fanbase.
Seat could be hot this time next year
Brad Brownell, Clemson – How do you follow up a Sweet 16 season, and a top 20 pre-season ranking? It isn’t by going 16-11 (6-8). Next year Clemson could be awful with the departure of 3 starters. Outside of last year, Brownwell has spent nearly a decade stuck in neutral at Clemson. He still has time to salvage this season.
Mike Brey, Notre Dame – Mike Brey has had tremendous success at Notre Dame. He’s been to the NCAA tournament 12 times, with a couple of elite 8 runs, but there’s concern in South Bend. The Irish are going to miss the NCAAs for the 2nd year in a row, and if it becomes 3 there could be some really unhappy Notre Dame fans.
Jim Larranaga, Miami – Miami made the NCAA tournament the last 2 years, but didn’t win a game. This year they won’t make the Big Dance, so it will be three years since Miami last won a tournament game. There has been injuries, and NCAA issues. Larranaga may need a big year next season.
Seat not HOT, but smoke could come quickly
Jim Boeheim, Syracuse – Jim Boeheim will retire when he wants too, but there is a sense of frustration from Syracuse fans with the Orange’s inconsistent play over the last 5 years.
Leonard Hamilton, FSU – From 2013-2016 the Noles missed 4 straight NCAA tournaments. Hamilton has righted the ship, and FSU should make the NCAAs for the 3rd year in a row. Still Hamilton always seems 1 bad season away from a mis-guided segment of FSU fans calling for him to move on.
Jeff Capel Pittsburgh – Pitt is no quick fix and Panther fans know this. Panther fans expect to better than 12-15 (2-12) at this point next year though.
Seat is currently Ice Cold
Kevin Keatts, NC State – You get the feeling Keatts is close to making NC State very very good. He should make the NCAAs again with the Wolfpack.
Buzz Williams, Virginia Tech – Buzz Williams has done an incredible job resurrecting Virginia Tech basketball. If a bigger name basketball program starts to call on Williams, he will have to be pried away from Hokie fans’ hands.
Roy Williams, UNC – Sometimes a few Tar Heel fans will start up a FireRoy call. Those fans are dumb. Roy is one of the best coaches of all time.
Mike K, Duke – Yea right…
Chris Mack, Louisville – He might be the ACC COY in 2019, and he’s bringing in a top 5 class. Despite a few hiccups he’s exceeded expectations in year one at Louisville.
Tony Bennett, Virginia – Bennett has made Virginia a national power, and Virginia fans love him for it.
