Good evening, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) fans.
I’m about to talk major history here – going way back to the days of the Metro Conference. Virginia Tech was once in a conference with schools like the University Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Memphis State (now the University of Memphis), and Tulane. Later members included Florida State University, University of Southern Mississippi, University of South Carolina, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of South Florida, and Virginia Commonwealth University.
The University of Louisville Cardinals were also part of the Metro Conference – Louisville was a charter member of the conference. in 1978, Virginia Tech joined the Metro Conference – but it wasn’t really without some drama (and I joke in part about that). Louisville wanted Virginia Tech to pay the full conference fee for partial Metro membership. That didn’t sit too well with Hokies at the time lol. This was one of the few wins:
Virginia Tech will play Louisville this year in men’s basketball – and let’s be fair – the Cardinals have owned Virginia Tech so much, one would think they might have to pay local property taxes in Blacksburg. Take a look at these nuggets below:
Louisville – if I’m not mistaken – has 25 wins in 27 attempts vs. Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech plays Louisville on ESPN’s Big Monday – February 4, 2019 – at home in Blacksburg, VA. #Hokies really need to win that game.

Whew – lost the last 14 meetings – last won in 1990-91 season. The last four games have all been less than 10 pts too. 8-33 all time. Both times VT’s been ranked higher (85-86 season) Tech lost both times.

This year, 2019, might be the best year for the Hokies to defeat Louisville – that game is in Blacksburg, VA on February 4, 2019, as part of ESPN’s Big Monday lineup. As we discussed here, Louisville made an fantastic men’s basketball hire in Chris Mack. Once Mack gets his own players on the roster, it’s going to be much more difficult for Virginia Tech to defeat Louisville – and this is the Hokies best roster in years.
If the Hokies don’t defeat Louisville this year, I don’t know when it’s going to happen.
The Hokies need this sort of a win as growth for their program. I’m sure the Virginia Tech players who are graduating want one win vs. Louisville.
