It simply doesn’t get any more gut-wrenching if you are a Virginia fan. The nauseating losing streak to your fiercest rival just keeps going. It now reaches 15 unbelievable years. With the game in hand up 31-24 in the 4th quarter a sequence started that will make Hoo fans sick…
- Virginia Tech completes a miracle 3rd down pass.
- Virginia Tech fumbles going into the endzone, Virginia misses the recovery and the Hokies score a TD.
- Virginia blocks the XP, but a flag is thrown for Cavalier offsides. Virginia ties the game.
- OT – Virginia lets Hokie QB Ryan Willis escape a sack that would have knocked the Hokies out of FG range.
- Hokies make the FG
- Virginia moves inside the Hokie 15 yard line, and then promptly has an unforced fumble that the Hokies recover – Game Over.
If took all 6 improbable plays to cost Virginia the win they desired more than any other.
This doesn’t even address some of the criticism that should start with Bronco Mendenhall’s conservative 4th quarter play-calling.
If Virginia can’t beat a Virginia Tech team that was getting wiped out week after week when will it happen? Kentucky losing to Florida lasted more than 30 years, and those are aren’t even that big of rivals. For everything Bronco Mendenhall has done, the Virginia program can’t take the next step in their growth until they beat Virginia Tech.
For the Hokies, you have to tip your hat to them. This was by far their most inspired game in months. Opponents from Georgia Tech to Miami were making Lane Stadium their personal playground. They really had no business winning Friday, but Justin Fuente kept his team playing hard.
Bud Foster’s maligned defense made just enough plays to give them a chance. The season has been a total mess for the Hokies, but now the season can still end on a high note.
Virginia Tech can’t let this be the end. With Marshall next week, the Hokies need to cash in by getting to a bowl and possibly winning their final 3 games.
Fuente took some heat this year, but he never let his team quit and that says something.
It’s a day of celebration for Virginia Tech, while the nightmare continues at Virginia.
