Virginia right on schedule with improving QB Bryce Perkins

Virginia took a tough loss Saturday to Georgia Tech. It was a hard fought 30-27 OT loss to the surging Jackets. More often than not the season all it takes is one loss for a fanbase to turn on their coaches.

Virginia fans are smart enough to realize the program is right on schedule under Bronco Mendenhall, and their QB Bryce Perkins will be one of the better QB’s in the conference next year.

There was disappointment, but overall the feeling is optimistic. Why shouldn’t it be? The Hoos are 7-4, and contended deep into the season for the Coastal Division Title. Then there is QB Bryce Perkins…

Early in the season Perkins, struggled with some accuracy issues. Since then he’s upped his completion percentage to nearly 64% with a passer rating of 143. He’s has become arguably the best dual threat QB in the ACC with three 100+ yards rushing games. Today against Georgia Tech he was 21 for 26 through the air. Here’s what really impressed me.

Several times Georgia Tech called a blitz package and seemed within moments of sacking Perkins. He hung in the pocket only to complete pass after pass. His poise in the pocket and development as the season has progressed is very apparent. I think the Hoos have a star in the making.

The icing on the cake to a season of optimism for Virginia is Friday. They entry their rivalry game with reeling Virginia Tech the better team. It’s on the road, but Blacksburg hasn’t exactly been a difficult to win at this year.

Virginia hasn’t beat their arch rival since 2003, but this could be the year with QB Bryce Perkins the streak could come to an end.
