You know the story. 2 months Georgia Tech was 1-3, and Paul Johnson was feeling some heat. We mentioned this last week too. With one game left in the season the Yellow Jackets are 7-4 after beating a quality Virginia team 30-27 in OT.
It was the best 2nd half turnaround in the ACC only matched by Pittsburgh’s run to the ACC Coastal Division title.
The margin of error in the ACC for teams between playoff caliber Clemson and one of the ACC’s worst teams ever Louisville is so thin – a missed FG here, a penalty there, maybe a turnover or two.
Last year Georgia Tech just found ways to lose close games. Now they are finding ways to win them, and it’s changed the entire complexion of the season and potentially Paul Johnson. The Yellow Jackets are 1 win from their third 8+ win season in the last 5.
How different is that than missing a bowl game for the third time in five years?
The Jackets have just 1 turnover in the last 2 games, both close victories over Miami and Virginia. That’s the difference between a 5-6 year and 7-4 right there.
The story of the season isn’t completely written for Georgia Tech. There’s still the rivalry game with Georgia. Certainly a tall order to win that one, but the Jackets at least are playing well enough to have a punchers chance.
Then there is the bowl game that didn’t look likely in September. For Georgia Tech fans they can be proud of a second half surge that’s been one of the most satisfying of the Paul Johnson era.
