A Virginia victory over Virginia Tech would make UVa’s season magical.

As a fan, I’ve been there. Clemson losing 5 straight games to South Carolina from 2009-2013. Georgia Tech with multiple 5+ year losing streaks to Georgia. No matter how good the season went, something is always missing when you lose to your biggest rival.

I’ve never experienced a rivalry losing streak like the one Virginia has to Virginia Tech. The Hoos have lost 14 straight to Virginia Tech. They have one win in the rivalry since 1999.

This season Virginia enters the their rivalry game 7-4. Virginia Tech is reeling at 4-6. The game is in Blacksburg, but this might the least intimidating a game at Virginia Tech has been in a couple of decades.

The Hokies have 4 double digit homes losses this year to Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Boston College and Miami. They have suffered injuries, attrition, and simply bad coaching to lead to one of their worst seasons in recent memory. Their 25 year bowl streak is in serious jeopardy.

Who can add to Virginia Tech’s misery? Virginia would gladly like to be that team. How else to release nearly 15 years of frustration? You send your arch-rival to their worst season in more than 25 years, while the resurgence of your own program takes another huge step.

As outsider looking in, I’ve always found this rivalry to be as intense and any you’ll find. One the other side of coin, for a season that’s gone sideways, how great would it be as a Virginia Tech fan to know you’ll still own your Virginia friends.

It may not salvage the season, but it sure would go a long way to making things feel a little better.

I just don’t think the Hokies are equipped to stop Virginia this year. QB Bryce Perkins is playing to well. The Hoos are too physical for a Hokie team that’s been pushed around all year.

A Virginia win would make their season magical. I think they have a great chance, but that’s why they play the game – 3:30 Friday for the Commonwealth Cup.

A win over UVA, followed by a win over Marshall, followed by a win in a minor bowl would get the Hokies to 7-6. It would be the hardest 7 wins any team ever got, but it would salvage the season in my opinion.

Will it happen? UVA is the biggest obstacle for sure.
