Florida State Opponent Preview: Boston College

Boston College

These are becoming increasingly difficult to write. The fact of the matter is, the longest FBS bowl streak and winning season streaks are both likely to end this weekend (yes, shots fired Matt!). This Florida State team is filled with toxicity that desperately needs to be purged. Willie Taggart has some soul searching he must do this off-season, and ground to make up, if he wants to keep off the hot seat in Tallahassee. Florida appears to be on the upswing, and can develop into a juggernaut if the Seminoles and Hurricanes both keep their present path. I still have faith in Coach Taggart, and understand offensive line woes require more than a season for repair, but changes need to be made for me to have any confidence in his capabilities to rebuild what is clearly a broken program.

While the final two games to close the season are both winnable for the Noles, they won’t come easy just because they’re in Doak. Boston College gave Clemson a fight on defense. The only thing giving the Noles any chance against the Eagles is that their quarterback is injured. Still, AJ Dillon alone should be enough to strike fear in the hearts of the Seminoles. Even if Florida State can overcome the Eagles, they must face their perennial rival, which was noted moments ago as being on the upswing. Again, their starting quarterback is injured as well, but Franks has proven he can win games. Neither of these teams are as good as Clemson, NC State, and Notre Dame mind you. They’re also not as bad as Samford, Northern Illinois, Wake Forest and (dumpster-fire) Louisville.

Final Verdict

Was enough proven over the latter half of the season for me to place any faith that Florida State can overcome these final two teams to maintain their streak? Quite frankly, I’ve seen the willingness to make changes and adapt the personnel and play calling. What I have not seen are the tools and capabilities to beat good teams, even when lead with back-up quarterbacks. Could Florida State pull a miracle and go 6-6? Sure. Are they more likely to go 4-8? You betcha! Are they going to split the difference and go 5-7? It’s possible. Will the Noles somehow, by some miracle of God, beat Boston College, building up the hopes and dreams and expectations of the Seminole faithful across the globe, only to have those dreams snuffed by the Gators? I dare not even give it thought.

And I won’t! Boston College: do Seminole nation a solid, and end our misery. End our season mercifully, end our streaks, so we may rebuild from the ashes. We need this off-season and all the accompanying changes sooner rather than later. Don’t give the Gators a shot at that satisfaction. Please.

Boston College: 27

Florida State: 24
