Florida State Opponent Preview: Notre Dame

Notre Dame

While not quite the performance I would of liked, I did see changes to the game last week that I do feel re-assured in the Taggart era. This post will not be quite as spirited, despite the opponent Florida State faces. Notre Dame is an elite program in 2018, and I wouldn’t expect much from Florida State in this match-up. Despite learning that Ian Book will hit the sidelines this game due to injury, their back-up quarterback was fully capable of beating playoff contender Michigan at home. Florida State is nowhere near the capabilities of Michigan this season and, unfortunately, will now see their 9th (!) different look to start at Offensive Line in the 10 games overall this season. Florida State, ironically enough, made the moves on offense last week to beat NC State thanks to an inspired debut from James Blackman and play calling from OC Walt Bell. The defense (and questionable officiating) made the game a no-contest, a concerning look considering the Seminoles boast a very talented and efficient defense.

Final Verdict

Florida State, to put it plainly, doesn’t have what it takes to pull the upset in South Bend. It’ll be below freezing by the 7:30 kickoff. The snow will curl, the winds will howl, and the passing game will take a hit for both teams. The backup at Notre Dame will likely struggle to run their offense with any efficiency. Likewise, the Noles will be dependent on a run-game that has been near non-existent this season. Blackman can run the offense more efficiently than Deondre, but the passing game will be tough in these conditions, leaving our offensive line to make holes for the run game (which has not happened all season). The offensive line will face an elite defense in Notre Dame. While our defense can stop the run, making this game closer than it should be, the suspect secondary will afford Notre Dame the edge at home and in a climate that is a bit too-cold for southern blood.

To make a bowl and keep their longest-active bowl streak alive, Florida State will need to win-out against Boston College and the University of Florida. The win won’t happen against the Fighting Irish.

Florida State: 21

Notre Dame: 24
