It couldn’t get worse for Louisville football, but it did against Wake Forest.

How bad is Louisville playing right now? It’s as bad as Clemson is playing good. Today Louisville played Wake Forest, the only other winless team team in the ACC at home. It was likely the Cardinals last opportunity for a victory this season. They lost their 5th game of the season by 18 or more points.

Wake Forest beat Louisville 56-35, and in general moved the ball at will against the Cardinals.

It was an embarrassing and humiliating performance for a team that continues to get worse as the season progress. The rapid decline of the Louisville program from 2 years ago when they were ranked in the top 5 at this same point in the season can fall on no-one else but Bobby Petrino.

What else can you say at this point that hasn’t been said? Louisville is one of the worst 5 football teams in FBS football. Bobby Petrino is getting no effort especially defensively. The blame for being this bad is so widespread that for Louisville to become a competitive football program again, it will require a cleaning of the house.

Louisville isn’t just mediocre, they are a truly awful football team by any measure. Petrino is obviously on the hotseat, but his buyout is so big it may force Louisville to wait another year before making a move. I have no confidence Bobby Petrino can right the ship. He completely missed in his talent evaluations over the last few years, and didn’t address issues the mega talented Lamar Jackson masked while at QB.

Petrino is a lame duck coach whose team it appears has quit on him. Purdue lost today, but is coached by Jeff Brohm. That’s the guy Louisville fans covet. All they can do is wait Petrino out. Maybe he’ll do Louisville a favor and just resign, but Cardinal fans wouldn’t be so lucky.

Next week Louisville goes to Clemson… Only Dabo Swinney’s mercy will keeping it from being 87-7.
