To Grow In the Fuente Era, Virginia Tech Football Must Defeat Georgia Tech

Good afternoon, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) football fans.

Hope you are enjoying some great ACC football today.

In 2016, Virginia Tech ended it’s curse on the road at Pittsburgh – and the Hokies had not won at Pittsburgh since 1999 – I mentioned that Virginia Tech, in order to grow as a program, had to end that streak.

We fast forward to 2018 – and Virginia Tech (who is 3-0 in the ACC and has four of its last five games at home) is now in the position where the Hokies must show some growth as a program defeat the Georgia Tech Yellowjackets.

The Hokies are 1-3 in their last four vs. Georgia Tech.  Coincidentally, Georgia Tech is 1-3 in the ACC this year.  You’re looking at a 2018 Jackets team that is desperate for a win – desperate, really, for anything good to happen at this point.

Georgia Tech is going to play that disciplined style of football they always play with that triple option attack – but they are going to play extra hard on that Thursday night in Blacksburg – and I’d expect Paul Johnson to have some of these 80 yard deep play action passes that no one is ready for.

You’ve got to think, too, that Fuente wants to beat Georgia Tech as much as anyone – his teams are 0-2 vs. the Jackets (should have won at Atlanta last year).  But if you want to show growth as a program, you’ve got to be in that position where you are defeating the teams you are supposed to defeat (Georgia Tech).  You don’t want to be in that position as a head coach where you lose three in a row to a Coastal Division opponent – because then they start talking about you like, “Oh, that coach has your number.”  They start talking mini-streaks.

Fuente, Foster, and the gang – have to get a win vs. Georgia Tech.
