Why was the NCAA not involved in the tragedy at Maryland?

If you haven’t already heard about the issues going on at the University of Maryland. Here is a quick synopsis. Back in May an University of Maryland football player, Jordan McNair passed away during an off-season workout. Then there was a very damning article published on ESPN.com focusing on what they called a “toxic culture,” within the football program. While we may never know if the allegations against strength coach Rick Court and Head Coach DJ Durkin, I have questions for the NCAA

When you go to the NCAA website, you will find a link to “Wellness.” When you have tragedies like the one that befell the McNair family why are you allowing the University to conduct it’s own investigation into what happened? Why are you allowing the university to dictate the outcome of the investigations? At the very least the NCAA should be an independent arbiter into what happened.

The NCAA spends too much of it’s time on the ridiculous and not what really matters. Instead of caring if kids are selling their apparel they should be making sure that student athletes are safe when involved in sports. The NCAA should be taking over investigations into player deaths instead of the schools. The NCAA is spending it’s time on the trivial instead of what is really important.

I really believe that the NCAA needs to be overhauled. It should be involved in the investigation of violations. The rule book needs to be revised and updated. It should include protocol for sexual assault involving student athletes. It should also include the by law that includes the NCAA will conduct the investigation into any death that has happened to any student athlete while that athlete is involved in any sport related activity. I’ve written about this before and I am sure I will again because the NCAA won’t get involved and will allow schools to conduct their own investigations into what happened….
