Another gem of an article from the esteemed @DavidTeelatDP. This time he discusses the challenges of the ACC Network distribution.
Here are some highlights from the article.
But the paramount ACC Network challenge for ESPN and its parent company, Disney, during the next 12 months will be securing carriage deals with the nation’s top cable and satellite providers. And those negotiations are likely to be public, protracted and perhaps contentious.
But as the SEC Network teaches, ACC fans shouldn’t expect similar deals this far in advance, even with Disney/ESPN’s considerable portfolio and, therefore, leverage with providers.
ACC fans shouldn’t expect or be all that concerned if carriage deals aren’t announced until right before the ACC Network launches next year. That’s just the nature of the business. The SEC Network’s timeline of distribution agreements went right up to the summer before their launch. That’s in Teel’s article. The Pac 12 is still struggling with carriage and the Big 10 is currently fighting with Comcast.
As Teel alludes to, it’s going to be a tough fight.
This is what excites me though…. from John Swofford.
“This fall, we will finalize the live event programming schedule for the fall, winter and spring sports,” he said. “Throughout the academic year, we’ll begin the process of considering our non-live program needs and reviewing different show ideas that will be on the ACC Network. And by next spring, we will have identified the talent for the programs that we create, as well as our lead game announcers for all sports. …
In the next 6-8 months we are going to really start seeing what the ACC Network will look like. That’s something to look forward to.
