Georgia Tech’s new locker room is a step in the right “facilities” direction.

We recently wrote that Georgia Tech was finally making a serious financial commitment to athletics.  Well if Georgia Tech’s recently unveiled new locker room is any indication then the Yellow Jackets are off to a good start in terms of facility upgrades. Check out the locker room below…

The player’s excitement says it all. This was a sorely needed improvement. The AJC calls the new locker room a showplace.

What does this mean in the greater scheme for Georgia Tech?

I’m really curious to hear recruits impressions of the locker room, but I imagine given the GT’s players reaction – recruits will be impressed. For years Paul Johnson has been coaching with one hand tied behind his back – facilities and branding wise. His 2014 Orange Bowl 11 win team, regarded by me as the best non Clemson/FSU ACC team of the decade could be remembered as one of greatest ACC coaching jobs of the last 20 years.

This is not an overstatement either.

Paul Johnson was working with some of the most out-dated facilities in the conference. The Russell gear apparel wasn’t helping. Now front and center is Adidas branding displayed all over a new locker room. Georgia Tech just joined the football arms race. In the next 5 years what will Paul Johnson be able to do without some of the facility handcuffs he’s been dealing with for years?

It’s too early to say if this is the start of a new era for Georgia Tech football. A newly renovated basketball arena in 2011-2012 still hasn’t resulted in a NCAA tournament appearance, but the new locker rooms certainly can’t hurt.

From that AJC article linked earlier… This is all that you need to know if you are a Georgia Tech fan.

The place dazzles and now puts Tech on a level with ACC competitors.

“We don’t want to come off as ungrateful, but it’s just like, we know what we had before and we understand that this is a step in the right direction for this program, knowing that it’s such a good recruiting tool,” defensive lineman Desmond Branch said.

We’ll see now if Paul Johnson can translate this in the next 2 – 3 years to on the field success, but he’s got a fancy new locker room to show off to recruits. That can only help.
