With the All Sports Discussion podcast kicking off their previews of all of the ACC schools, it got me thinking, will the ACC have a representative in the College Football Playoff this season? When you look at that question, you have to say “of course they will!” Clemson, Miami, VT all have a shot coming into this season, that is no doubt. However, when you start looking at what each team lost, each of those teams have question marks.
Clemson brings back a defensive line that is in the conversation of the best defensive lines of all time. Yes, that defensive line has the potential to be one of the best defensive lines in the history of college football. Kelly Bryant is a returning starter who was a solid college quarterback. While the Tigers return Hunter Renfrow, they have talented yet untested WR’s.
Miami, lost their go to, do everything, safety blanket Braxton Berrios. Malik Rosier looked shaky at the end of last season. With LSU, Virginia Tech (on the road), and Florida State there are some tough games on the schedule.
Virginia Tech has a returning starting quarterback who played very well as a red-shirt freshman, and I believe will take that next step in his development. However, the Hokies will have to replace the Edmonds brothers who were the first brothers ever chosen in the first round of the NFL draft. They also have to replace the prodiction of Cam Phillips.
These are the 3 teams that I think give the ACC the best shot to make the College Football Playoff. And while these holes that each team need to replace, they aren’t overwhelming. All these teams have players that can step up for their schools and replace the production that Clemson, Miami, and VT are losing. I believe that Clemson will end up making the playoff, and they are the closest thing to a lock there is, however, the do have holes to fill. And if those WR’s don’t develop as I think they will, that will be a big problem for the Tigers.
