Good evening, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans. Hope your weekend is going well.
We step out of the ACC tonight for a short post (there are several lacrosse aficionados in the ACC and we’re going out of the conference tonight).
Full disclosure: I’m a donor to Georgetown University Athletics (I’m an alumnus of Georgetown).
Today, the Georgetown Hoyas men’s lacrosse team (#17/#18) won their first ever Big East Conference Championship over the Denver University Pioneers (#3/#3). The game was NEVER CLOSE. The Hoyas won 8-3 on the strength of their goalie, Nick Marrocco, who had 14 saves. Marracco, an All-American, has the fourth most saves in Georgetown University men’s lacrosse history.
Georgetown was picked 5th in the Big East Men’s Lacrosse Media Poll – and has a total of six wins covering the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons. This year, the Hoyas put together twelve wins – and won the Big East Championship. This is no small feat – and a huge turnaround.
The Hoyas will be playing on the road in the first round – the only question is where they will be playing. I think the Hoyas could very likely be headed for a rematch with Loyola College in Baltimore, MD. That was a close game. And Georgetown has a very hot goalie. Anything can happen in one NCAA playoff game (the Hoyas haven’t been to the NCAA tournament since 2007) – just ask the University of Virginia about that.
Hoya Saxa!!
