Stating the Obvious, Virginia Tech Needs to Recruit Some Post Depth

Good evening, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.

I watch Virginia Tech and Louisville play today – and going into this game, I had the same feeling my buddy, @TalkinACCSports.  Here’s what he said Twitter:

The outcome didn’t turn out the way I wanted at all, of course.  The Hokies lost 75 – 68.  If you pour into the stat sheet, here’s a few things you’re going to see:

  • The Hokies were 6 of 21 from three-point land.  Woof.
  • Louisville had 17 more rebounds than Virginia Tech.  SEVENTEEN.

If those three-point shots aren’t falling, it can be a long night for the Hokies.  You’re not going to defeat too many teams with that bad of a rebounding disadvantage.  You need more post depth to give your team opportunities for offensive rebounds.

The Hokies have one of the best young centers in the ACC.   Kerry J Blackshear has been outstanding this year – he might be the most skilled player Virginia Tech’s team.  However, if he is in foul trouble, Virginia Tech becomes a pretty small team.  Looking at the roster here, the tallest player is either Chris Clarke or PJ Horne at 6’6″.  While rebounding is part effort, these guys aren’t going to win too many rebounding battles among the bigger players – the trees –  in the ACC.

Having Khadim Sy back on the team next year will be a big help for the squad – but going forward, Buzz Williams’ future teams need to have more post depth because an on court team of four guards/wings/whatever is only going to get you so far.

Perhaps Buzz should target a graduate transfer big man next year.  Food for thought.

And that’s it (go Hokies!) – thanks for reading @AllSportsDACC.
