Final Thoughts on the 2017 British Open : Jordan Spieth draws comparisons to all-time greats with British Open win.

Anytime you’re mentioned in the same sentence as Jack Nicklaus you are doing something right. Jordan Spieth after his stirring British Open win became the 2nd youngest player to win win 3 legs of the Grand Slam. Only Jack Nicklaus accomplished this feat at a younger age. Jordan Spieth doesn’t hit the furthest, or the straightest, but at age 23 he’s already a 3 time major winner.

What separates Spieth is his mental toughness is unparalleled in golf right now. As he was being pushed by Matt Kuchar on the Back 9 Sunday, he mentally kept things kept together and played holes 14-17 in an incredible -5. It’s too early to say if Spieth could eventually approach Woods (14) or Nicklaus (18) major numbers, but he’s definitely not done winning them.

  • “If you need a darkhorse veteran pick, it might be Matt Kuchar.”    Yep I wrote that. Matt Kuchar nearly won his first major, but ran into the mentally toughest player golf has seen since Jack Nicklaus. I believe Kuchar will get that elusive major. At age 39, he’s still young enough to contend in the majors for 5 or 6 years. He’s too good a player not to win one.
  • Rory Mcilory didn’t win, but he had a solid T4. Mcilory is in a bit of a major dry spell. He hasn’t won a major since 2014, but I really get the feeling his 5th major is not far off. His game is rounding into form, and he has 6th top 10 major finish in his last 11 majors. You contend that often you’ll win again. I’m waiting for that Spieth\Mcilory duel. It’s coming.
  • Dustin Johnson with a 77 in the final round? Johnson was on top of the golfing world a couple of months ago. It just proves how quickly you can slip back even for a player of Johnson’s ability. If Johnson had Spieth’s brain, he’d be unbeatable.
  • Brooks Koepka followed up his U.S. Open win, with a T6 this week. He looks like a force with staying power.
  • Phil Mickelson badly missed the cut. I still Mickelson still has a few more major runs, but those chances are starting to dwindle at age 47.
  • August 10, the PGA Championship heads to Quail Hollow in Charlotte for the year’s final major. Rory Mcilory has won there twice. Rickie Fowler also has a win at Quail Hollow – watch out for those two.
