#ACC Men’s Basketball Will Be A Grinder This Year

11854757

Good evening, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.

Just a quick post here – ACC men’s basketball is going to be an absolute grinder this year.  The conference is the deepest that both @TalkinACCSports and I have seen in many years – and one thing we’ve learned is that it is going to be hard as hell to win on the road.

Evidence:  We’ve already told you about Virginia Tech’s win vs. Duke in Blacksburg.  North Carolina taking the loss today at Georgia Tech.  This is somewhat baffling to me – because Georgia Tech, quite frankly, is in rebuilding mode.  That said, when North Carolina hands 20 turnovers to Georgia Tech, these types of upsets are possible (via @scacchoops)

Yet…

Notre Dame and Florida State (h/t @scacchoops for both links) found ways to win on the road in overtime at Pittsburgh and Virginia, respectively.  Notre Dame and Pittsburgh are two of the most offensively efficient teams in the ACC and in the country – while Florida State and Virginia are two of the best defensive teams in the country.  Both games were close throughout – and show that if you can win on the road in the ACC, then you can put your team in the picture for that two-day bye in the ACC tournament (because that’s what you want at the end of the season).

A long way to go – who’s in first place in ACC play right now after the first weekend?  Florida State.  The top three teams in the league – all ranked in the top 12 – took losses – and this might become the norm in league play.
