Paul Johnson still has some tricks up his sleeve as Georgia Tech wins at Virginia Tech.

That wily Paul Johnson… There were hotseat rumors. He was coming off a 3-9 season in 2015, his vaunted triple option offense had been solved, and he entered a game at Top 15 Virginia Tech out 5 offensive starters. Oh and Georgia Tech had the worst 3rd down defense in the entire country.

This was the epitome of a circle the wagons effort by Paul Johnson and his staff. Bud Foster the Hokies great DC, gave Johnson a classy compliment at the end of the game.

The Yellow Jackets sacked Virginia Tech QB Jerod Evans 5 times and held the Hokies to 6/14 on 3rd down conversions. It was as an inspired a Georgia Tech effort as we’ve seen in a couple of years – at least since Georgia Tech beat Florida State last year.

Johnson had backup QB Matt Jordan milk the clock on nearly every possession. That certainly will shorten the game, but you have to be able to move the ball effectively. The Yellow Jackets had 309 yards rushing.

Paul Johnson has been at Georgia Tech since 2008, and now he’s one of the old guard of ACC coaches. He proved today that he still has some tricks up his sleeve. This has the potential to change the direction of the Georgia Tech season. The Yellow Jackets now are bowl eligible, and have a chance at an 8 or 9 win season. They  have suddenly won 3 of their last 4 games.

It’s hard to pin-point exactly where this effort came from. Virginia Tech played unfocused and without urgency, but Georgia Tech was the aggressor the entire game. You have to credit Paul Johnson for a job well done today.
