Week 3 ACC Football Power Rankings

ACCfootballpowerrankings-300x252

The ACC was in full force last weekend, as all 14 teams saw action. The conference totaled 498 points and went 9-5, with four teams playing against each other. There has obviously been a shift in power, with a new team taking the throne.

#3 Louisville: 63-20 win over Florida State

Picking Louisville to beat Florida State wasn’t a bad pick at all, but no one could predict the Cardinals were going to lay the wood on the Seminoles. Quarterback Lamar Jackson shined with his five touchdowns, but the defense deserves the same amount of credit. Seminoles quarterback Deondre Francois only completed seven out of 18 pass attempts for 101 yards and was sacked four times, as the defense produced nine tackles for losses and limited the Seminoles to only two third down conversions all game. Louisville outgained Florida State 530 yards to 284 yards. Louisville proved that they are a national title contender.

#5 Clemson: 59-0 win over South Carolina State

The Tigers defense totally shut down South Carolina State, as the Bulldogs only passed for 48 yard and ran for 54 on the day. The Tigers outgained the Bulldogs 555-102 with Deshaun Watson having a quick day. Watson threw for three touchdowns and headed to the bench before the first half ended.

#15 Miami: 45-10 win over Appalachian State

The Hurricanes continue their dominant start as they have outscored opponents 153-23 this season. Brad Kaaya had one of his best games at Miami, throwing for 368 yards and three touchdowns. The Hurricanes have are now the #15 team in the country, moving up ten spots from their #25 preseason spot.

#13 Florida State: 63-20 loss to Louisville

There’s not much positivity to come out of Florida State’s embarrassing 63-20 loss to Louisville. Head coach Jimbo Fisher is rightfully upset saying, “I’m mad. I’m pissed off at myself that we allowed that to happen. I’m pissed off at our coaches. But at the same time, yelling and ranting and raving now isn’t going to do anything.” The talent is surely there for the Seminoles bounce back from this and now have focus on taking care of business against South Florida.

North Carolina: 56-28 win over James Madison

Junior quarterback Mitch Trubisky set a career high with 432 passing yards on 24 of 27 passing as the Tar Heels cruised to an easy victory over James Madison. Trubisky set school records for the Tar Heels in the categories of most consecutive completions in a single game with 18 and most consecutive passing attempts without an interception with 156.

Pittsburgh: 45-28 loss to Oklahoma State

The Panthers lost a game they know they needed to win, as they could not stop the Cowboys’ offense in any way. Quarterback Mason Rudolph threw for 540 yards, running back Rennie Childs had four touchdowns and there was no answer for wide receiver James Washington with his 296 yards receiving on only nine receptions. The defense must be addressed quickly, as the Panthers travel to Chapel Hill to take on quarterback Mitch Trubisky, who is coming off the best game of his career.

Georgia Tech: 38-7 win over Vanderbilt

The Yellow Jackets have already matched their win total from last season, as they handily beat Vanderbilt at home last weekend. They are ready to pull off a major upset at home two years in a row, with Clemson coming to Atlanta this weekend. Georgia Tech team beat at-the-time #9 Florida State 22-16 at home last season, so the Tigers should not sleep on them.

Wake Forest: 38-21 win over Delaware

Wake Forest continued it’s undefeated season with a solid home win against Delaware. The Demon Deacons defense was suffocating, only allowing 38 yards passing and 56 yards running on the day. They travel to Indiana this week to face the Hoosiers.

N.C. State: 49-22 win over Old Dominion

The Wolfpack offense continues to put up points this season, averaging 42.3 points in three games this season. The team will enjoy a bye week this week and will face Wake Forest at home on October 1st.

Syracuse: 45-20 loss to South Florida

Syracuse jumped out of the gates early with a 17-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, but could not make adjustments and got bullied for the rest of the game, getting outscored 45-3. The Orange seem to be going through growing pains with new head coach Dino Babers

Virginia Tech: 49-0 win over Boston College

The Hokies took full advantage of the woeful Boston College Eagles in their dominating 49-0 victory. Jerod Evans tied a school record with five touchdown passes and the defense held the Eagles to 2.8 yards per pass and 1.6 yards per rush, a perfect recipe for a shutout.

Duke: 24-13 loss to Northwestern

After getting upset by Wake Forest last week, the Blue Devils hand Northwestern their first win of the season, giving up 406 total yards. The Blue Devils couldn’t take care of business in Northwestern’s territory, throwing an interception and missing a field goal both from under 40 yards.

Boston College: 49-0 loss to Virginia Tech

Boston College looked like they didn’t belong on the same field as Virginia Tech. The Hokies outgained the Eagles 476-124, as the Eagles once again greatly struggle against ACC opponents.

Virginia: 13-10 loss to Connecticut

The Cavaliers saw a 10-3 lead disappear as the Huskies scored 10 points in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Kurt Benkert led the offense down the field in a 73-yard drive down to the UConn two-yard line. With no timeouts remaining, the field goal team rushed to the field and missed a chip shot field goal to tie the game. The Cavaliers are the only winless team in the ACC.
