So, let’s talk briefly (I’ll get out of my #ACC hat and go homer here for a minute):
1.) There are some positives: Virginia Tech had more total yards on offense than Tennessee. The play calling was as good as I’ve seen in many years. The Hokies actually have an offensive system.
2.) It was hard for me to watch Virginia Tech shoot itself in the foot when it was working Tennessee on offense. The turnovers were painful (as were the penalties on offense and defense) and came at the most inopportune time. I think that part can get fixed. However, until it is fixed, the margin isn’t there to make those sorts of mistakes – we don’t have the talent of Florida State, for example, to make up for that – we have to play mistake-free (or close to it) football.
3.) The Hokies are in dire need of some defensive playmakers at linebacker – I’m happy with what Virginia Tech has on the defensive line – and at cornerback (Mook Reynolds was a baller) – there are some playmakers at those positions, but there are some glaring holes on defense (keep recruiting).
4.) This is a team that probably will win 7 games – and I’d be very happy with a Belk or Music City Bowl bid in Justin Fuente’s first year. Start by beating Boston College.
Go #Hokies!!
