Recently I posted an article title Is Cat Barber the front-runner for ACC Player of the Year. It was met with a good response, so I decided to look more in-depth at the 3 other players I consider the top candidates to win ACC player of the year. I have UNC’s Brice Johnson, Duke’s Grayson Allen, and here we’re going to talk about Virginia’s Malcolm Brogdon.
With the loss of Justin Anderson, some wondered if could Brogdon fill the role of Virginia’s primary scorer. He’s delivered averaging nearly 18 points a game which is third in the ACC. The Cavaliers are again in the top 10, and in contention for an ACC regular season title.
Do you need a free throw made late in a game? Brogdon shoots nearly 88% from the line. He also shoots 40% from the three-point line. To me his jump shot looks so repeatable, I think it’s going to go in every time he fires a 3.
What may separate Brogdon from the other POY contenders is his defense. Monday night Cat Barber had one of his worst games of the season. He was primarily guarded by Brogdon.
From the DailyPress recap of the NC State Virginia game.
Brogdon used his length, quickness and strength, plus considerable help from teammates on ball screens, to limit Barber to his second-lowest scoring in ACC play this season
He has been playing that kind of lock down defense for most of his Virginia career.
The AugustaFreePress says Malcolm Brogdon is Player of the Year Good. They may very well be right.
