How many ACC Baseball teams will make the NCAA tournament?

Miami_Baseball

We’ve reached the half-way point of the ACC tournament. If you want to see how the tournament is going please check out the ACC’s Baseball Tournament page.

Even before the tournament ends I think we can make some projections on which ACC teams will make the NCAA baseball tournament.  We look at each tourney hopeful, and their record in the ACC tournament so far.

Here was Baseball America’s projected field before the conference tournaments started.

#3 Louisville Cardinals – (43-15) (1-1)

The Cardinals have probably locked up a national top 8 seed, even if they go 1-2 and lose their final ACC tournament game to FSU.

#8 Miami Hurricanes – (43-13) (1-0)

Miami has won 13 games in row, and even if it is against weaker competition can earn a top 8 seed if they make it to the ACC Tournament Championship game. A 2-1 record will still give them a good shot. They are the nation’s #1 RPI team.

#13 Florida State – (39-19) (2-0)

The Seminoles probably lost their shot at top 8 seed after getting swept at home last week by Clemson. If they win ACC Tournament they might have a chance. At the very least they will host a regional

Virginia Cavaliers – (34-20) (0-1)

The Cavaliers have been one of the more disappointing teams in the country, but will make the NCAAs. They will be a 2 or 3 seed, and have to travel for their regional.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish – (35-20) (0-1)

The Irish will make field. The Irish are just like the Cavaliers. They will probably be a 2 or 3 seed and have to travel somewhere for a regional.

North Carolina Tar Heels – (33-24) (0-2)

If the Tar Heels go 0-3 in the ACC tournament, will they make the NCAAs? It will be close, but I think they sneak in no matter what. It would do them well to win a game.

Clemson Tigers (32-26) (1-1)

The Tigers are one erratic baseball team, but they have won 4 of their last 5 games. In those 4 wins there are 3 wins over Florida State and a victory over Louisville. They are in.

North Carolina State Wolfpack (32-20) (1-0)

The Wolfpack won’t get to host a regional, but having already won an ACC Tournament game they will be playing some post-season baseball.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (32-23) (0-1)

The Yellow Jackets lost their last 5 games by a combined score of 59-5. That’s how you play yourself out of the NCAAs. Their RPI is in low 30s, but I don’t think the Yellow Jackets make it. You just can’t finish the season completely falling apart.

There are no other ACC teams under NCAA consideration. I believe the ACC will get 8 teams into the baseball. Now where they end up, will depend on how the ACC Tourney finishes up.
