ACC Basketball Power Rankings – February 25, 2015

blackoutline

It’s been another exciting week in the Atlantic Coast Conference, featuring misspelled jerseys, another crazy Virginia fan, and Roy Williams spitting hot fire at UNC fans. However, in all the excitement, you may have missed the ACC connection to the Daytona 500, or this guy wearing a golden thong. That’s what I’m here for!

1 – Virginia: The Cavaliers have a comfortable lead in the standings, but some folks just can’t contain themselves. Learn from Goose Guy, bro. Relax. And don’t stop believing.

2 – Duke: There’s been much discussion of Duke’s “lack of depth” this season with only eight scholarship players with March looming. For those people, I recommend this post from Al Featherston, ACC history extraordinaire. I also suggest a deep breath and at least three steps backwards from the edge.

3 – Louisville: The Cardinals got a little close for comfort this week, beating Miami and Georgia Tech by a combined three points.

4 – Notre Dame: If you lose to a team that won’t be going to the ACC Tournament, does it truly count as an ACC loss? Unfortunately for the Irish, the answer is yes.

5 – NC State: Don’t look now, but the Wolfpack has won three in a row, with two of those games coming at Louisville and Chapel Hill. They also have a silly obsession with banana hammocks.

6 – North Carolina: On Saturday, UNC beating Georgia Tech was overshadowed by Roy Williams calling out the Smith Center crowd. On Tuesday, a raucous Smith Center crowd was overshadowed by the worst offensive performance by a Tar Heel team in the building’s history in a loss to NC State.

7 – Pittsburgh: If you didn’t listen to my podcast appearance yet, you should totally do that. If only for the part where I said teams like NC State and Pittsburgh wouldn’t make the tournament before their big Tuesday wins. Or the part where I said Marquise Williams graduated. I’m a genuine expert on this stuff.

8 – Syracuse: PRO TIP – If you’re going to honor a former player by retiring his jersey, spell his name correctly. At least you know where Syracuse’s Ws are going now.

9 – Florida State: The Seminoles will engage in the bitter in-state rivalry with Miami again tonight, which featured a come-from-behind win for Florida State in Tallahassee last time they met.

10 – Clemson: Sure, the Tigers lost to Duke on Saturday. However, Clemson alum Todd Gordon is the crew chief for Joey Logano, the 24-year-old driver who won Sunday’s Daytona 500. A-C-C! A-C-C!

11 – Miami: Three of Miami’s last four losses have been by two points or fewer. However, Miami’s last four wins have been against Syracuse (a month ago), Clemson, Boston College, and Virginia Tech. What happened to the team that beat Duke?

12 – Virginia Tech: While unlikely, a Hokie win in Cassell Coliseum against Duke would be a pretty fitting conclusion to the last seven days in the ACC (and a great momentum boost before they head to Charlottesville).

13 – Wake Forest: LITTLE KNOWN FACT – Wake Forest University is in Raleigh-Durham, the fictional metropolis of Wake-Durham County that only truly exists in the world of aviation. With no Demon Deacons basketball games since the last update, this will have to be your Winston-Salem report this time.

14 – Boston College: Olivier Hanlan? More like, “Olivi, eh, it sure would be nice if my teammates would give me a Hand-lan.” 39 points for the junior in Tuesday’s loss to Pittsburgh.

15 – Georgia Tech: Using my incredible yet anonymous sources, I have obtained this exclusive photo from inside the GT locker room.

Until next week, peace, love, and #goacc.
