When did the ACC become such a well rounded sports conference?

You always hear about the ACC being a basketball only conference… Then at the same time ACC critics say the basketball is down too. Is it really that bad with two potential #1 seeds?

Ok it’s not vintage ACC basketball, but it’s still among the country’s better basketball conferences.

There’s statistic I came across that seems to counter some of this. A statistic that the ACC is the only conference in America can lay claim to.

I think we call agree that College Football and College Basketball are the biggest collegiate sports out there. Let’s thrown College baseball as number 3. I think that’s fair. The ACC is nation’s only conference with multiple teams in the top 10 in all three sports.

Really? Looks like the ACC took steps in 2012-2013 to becoming a well-rounded sports conference.

Final College Football Coaches Polls

Florida State #8

Clemson #9

Even if you add Ohio State that’s still top 10 for both.

Current Basketball Coache’s Poll

Duke #1

Miami #4

Current Baseball America Poll

North Carolina #1

NC State #8

Let’s look at the other major conferences and their top 10 teams in the same polls.

Football

SEC – 5

Pac 12 – 2

Big 10 – 0

Big 12 – 0

Big East  – 0

Basketball

SEC – 1

Pac 12 – 1

Big 10 – 3

Big 12 – 0

Big East  – 1

Baseball

SEC – 5

Pac 12 – 2

Big 10 – 0

Big 12 – 0

Big East  – 1

Now I’m not calling the ACC the best sports conference. Far from it… You have to win championships, and the ACC’s last one was in Duke’s 2010 National Title in basketball. I’m merely pointing out there is some depth to the ACC across all the major sports.
