Just a short post tonight after watching Miami’s 30-12 victory over Virginia Tech. Quick name a can’t playmaker on Virginia Tech’s team? Can’t name one? Neither can I. QB Logan Thomas has some raw ability, but is inconsistent at best. RB J.C Coleman has some speed, but is not a game changer.
The Hokies stand at 4-5 and are likely staring right at 4-6 after FSU visits Blacksburg next week. The rapid decline of Virginia Tech has been astounding. This was a team that was ranked in the top 15 earlier this year, and was the Coastal Division favorite. Against Miami Thursday night they looked slow and un-athletic. I didn’t think it was possible for a Frank Beamer coached team to be this bad. It’s hard to say if this is a sign of things to come or just a 1 year blip for Virginia Tech.
Miami on the other hand appears to be a team on the rise. Are they great? No, but when you see a guy like Freshman RB Duke Johnson rushing for huge gains and making plays in the return game, the Canes have potential. The much maligned defense made some plays Thursday night and if the Canes can get a little defense this isn’t a half bad team.
Remember Miami is 5-1 against teams not in the top 10. Except for the loss to UNC, Miami’s other losses are FSU, KState, and Notre Dame. Given a more reasonable schedule the Canes are probably a 7-2 or 6-3 type team. Al Golden has done a solid job at Miami this year, and the Hurricanes may find themselves in the ACC Title game if they take care of business.
