Notre Dame may join ACC in Football at a later date

I’m glad to have a new author submit an article.

This week we have MiamiJosh, a Miami Hurriance’s fan, giving his opinion on Notre Dame and the ACC.

You can find MiamiJosh on twitter at @AsylumGodfather.

I hope you enjoy his piece!

With the changing to a playoff system in college football and with the opinion that it appears Notre Dame might be left out in the cold for not being in a conference I could see them joining the ACC fully once the TV contract with NBC is up. Once the contract is up with NBC and Notre Dame Joins in football (hopefully) the ACC will be able to rework their TV contract with ESPIN/ABC and the money would flow to the ACC from the reworked contract. Plus ND then would have access to the playoffs. None of this is fact but my thinking of what may be going on behind closed doors because, if you look at the statements of ACC officials, ND officials, & coaches there is always a reference to “at this time” or “with the changing landscape” and other words like that within the statements.

Dabo Swinney, Clemson: “I’m sure they could have their pick of conferences, and for them to choose the ACC is, I think, a great thing. They’re making a commitment to play five conference football games. Even though they’re not going to be a football member right now, for them to make that commitment, I think that’s very strong, so it’s exciting. It further secures this conference’s strength of schedule and moving forward as we get into the playoff scenarios. I think it’s a real positive for the ACC.”

Looking at Dabo’s statement “Even though they’re not going to be a football member right now” this makes me think that ND will join as a football member after their NBC deal is up. Repeated statements like this within the statements of the ACC officials, ND officials, and coaches makes me think there is more tricks up the sleeve of the ACC in the future.
Also I think the ACC will add a 16th team as the playoff date comes closer and I think Penn State with their rabid fan base will be an easy poach-able target from the B1G. Plus in my opinion Penn State would be happy to have a fresh start in a new conference. These moves would solidify the ACC as a football power and virtually unbeatable in Basketball and could catapult the ACC to the top of the College sports world in the future.

Now, with the ACC sticking to an 8 game conference format that makes it more appealing for Notre Dame to join as a full football member at a later date because they can keep some of their national matchups together. This also opens up the door to put together an deal between the B1G conference and the ACC to play football games since the deal between the Pac12 and the B1G fell through because of the PAC12 9 conference game format. These moves in my opinion would solidify the ACC as a football power and virtually unbeatable in Basketball and could catapult the ACC to the top of the College sports world in the future.
