My Vote For The 2011-2012 ACC Anthony J. McKevlin and Mary Garber Awards

Good evening, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.  Today marks a milestone for All Sports Discussion as one of the site’s writers (yours truly @HokieGuru) will be making his first vote for a 2011-2012 ACC postseason honor.  Members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association (ACSMA) vote on the top male and female athletes of the year who show exemplary talent throughout the year.

Specifically, the ACSMA votes on the Anthony J. McKevlin and Mary Garber Awards, which go to the most outstanding male and female athletes, respectively.  As always, there are some excellent candidates for each of the awards.  Please see the 2012 – McKevlin Award Nominees and the 2012 – Garber Award Nominees.

My vote this year for the 2011-2012 Anthony J. McKevlin Award goes to Luke Kuechly, a junior linebacker for the Boston College Eagles.  He was the 9th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft for the Carolina Panthers), he earned the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (national defensive player of the year); the Butkus Award (most outstanding linebacker); the Rotary Lombardi Award (top lineman or inside linebacker); and the Lott Impact Trophy (defensive player of the year).  No ACC male athlete is more deserving of this honor than Luke Kuechly.

Additionally, my vote this year for the 2011-2012 Mary Garber Award goes to Becca Ward, a senior in the Fencing program at Duke.  She was Duke’s first three-time individual NCAA Champion when she captured her third NCAA Women’s Saber Championship as a senior.  She reached the NCAA Championship match during all four years of competition and is only the fourth women’s fencer in NCAA history to win three national titles.  More importantly, she is a student athlete to the 100th degree – she received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and the ACC’s Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship Award.

Good luck from all of us at All Sports Discussion to all the deserving McKevlin and Garber nominees!!
