Elimination weekend in the ACC

Week 6 is upon us, and I’m looking at this weekend in the ACC as elimination weekend. Clemson and Georgia Tech are your frontrunners, and mathematically anyone can still win either division, but I don’t see either team losing more than twice at most. Let’s take a look at the latest ACC standings.

Atlantic Conf. W-L Overall W-L
Clemson 2-0 5-0
Wake Forest 2-0 3-1
Maryland 1-0 2-2
Florida St. 0-1 2-2
N. Carolina St. 0-2 2-3
Boston College 0-2 1-4
Coastal Conf. W-L Overall W-L
Georgia Tech 2-0 5-0
Duke 1-0 3-2
North Carolina 1-1 4-1
Virginia Tech 0-1 4-1
Virginia 0-1 3-2
Miami (Fla.) 0-1 2-2

Miami at Virginia Tech.

This one is easy, loser is done in the Coastal. Sure for example the Hokie’s easy schedule may allow them to run the table, but any team that loses two straight conference games at home isn’t winning out. Miami has a ton of injuries, and that Ohio State win is quickly looking less and less impressive.

Who’s Out – Miami, I’d really be stunned if the Hokies lose 2 in a row in Blacksburg.

Boston College at Clemson

The best thing that can happen from this game is that Clemson doesn’t get anyone hurt, and BC gets on with the business of finding a new head coach.

Who’s Out – I don’t even have to answer this.

Maryland at Georgia Tech

A month ago Maryland looked like a dark horse contender in the Atlantic after a national TV win over Miami. That was a lifetime ago. I still feel MD QB Danny O’Brien can hurt a suspect Georgia Tech D through the air and throw a scare into Jackets.

Who’s Out – Maryland: It would only be Terps 1st ACC loss, but this team is headed in the wrong direction. Heck some of the players have already said they can’t wait until the season is over, but if they win they still have a shot.

Florida State at Wake Forest

This game is as critical for these teams as the Miami Virginia Tech game. Florida State is already behind the eight ball after losing at Clemson, but a loss here and they’re finished. Wake Forest is off to a surprising 3-1 start and if they beat FSU you’d have to consider them a real threat in the Atlantic.

Who’s Out – Wake Forest: Florida State is a rested and angry team. They just have too much talent for the Deacs. Like Maryland, it would only be Wake Forest’s first ACC losses, but you can’t afford any home losses with the way Clemson is playing.

Who Will Remain:

Atlantic: Clemson, Florida State

Coastal: Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, North Carolina (but they already have a loss to Georgia Tech)
