There’s so much going on starting with some NC State fans who are steaming mad at ACC official Karl Hess for ejecting a couple of NC State legends Saturday against Florida State. StateFansNation wrote a piece titled A Call to Arms that encourages Pack fans to let their feelings be known. For the segment of NC State fans ready to go SEC, let me ask you this.

You think you’re going to get a fair shake in Tuscaloosa, Alabama or Athens, Georgia? If you want to stick to the ACC, make John Swofford hand you a championship trophy, but yea I’d be mad too if I were a NC State fan.

Duke is readying for a huge game with Florida State Thursday. DukeSportsBlog says the Blue Devils are eyeing this rematch.

We haven’t checked in with Georgia Tech blog FromtheRumble Seat in awhile. They are reviewing the Yellow Jackets recent signing class. Their most recent article focuses on Tyler Stargel with links to several other players.

ACCBlogger looks at the Bubble and Bracket situation for the ACC.

TestudoTimes defends Maryland coach Randy Edsall’s decision to block former QB Danny O’Brien from attending Vanderbilt and join former Maryland OC James Franklin. Not sure I agree with it, but certainly some valid points were made.

Virginia blog asks What’s changed since the Cavaliers and in state rival Virginia Tech last played? I know one thing that better change. Virginia doesn’t want to lose to the Hokies again, or that NCAA bubble inches a little bit closer.

For the first time in a couple of weeks the number of ACC teams I’ve had in the NCAA tournament has dropped from 6 to 5 teams. Who dropped out? Take a look below.

In my ranking system, any RPI top (100) win is a good win and any RPI top (50) obviously worth more. Any losses outside the RPI top (100) is considered a bad loss, and outside the RPI (150) are even more damaging. I’m not counting future results only if I think a team would make the NCAA’s if selections were made the day of the post.

My RPI rankings come from, CBSSportsline.com.

Locks

(4) Duke (23-4) (10-2) Projected Seed 1

Last 10 – (8-2)

Good Wins – (69) Belmont, * (2) Michigan St., (76) Davidson, * (14) Michigan, * (5) Kansas, * (30) Colorado St., (53) Washington, * (42) Virginia, (94) Maryland, *(6) UNC, (94) Maryland, (56) NC State

Bad Losses -None

Notes – A 20 point comeback at home against NC State keeps Duke in line for a number 1 seed. They also were pretty sharp in a route of Boston College.

(6) North Carolina (23-4) (10-2) Projected Seed 2

Last 10 – (8-2)

Good Wins – * (2) Michigan St., * (23) Wisconsin, * (35) Long Beach St., * (51) Texas, * (46) Miami, (56) NC State, (94) Maryland, * (42) Virginia, *(46) Miami

Bad Losses – None

Notes – Can UNC still get a number 1 seed? With road games at NC State, UVA, and Duke plus the ACC Tournament, it can still be done.

(20) Florida State (19-7) (10-2) Projected Seed 5

Last 10 – (9-1)

Good Wins – (53) UCF, (89) UMASS, (90) Loyola Marymount, * (6) North Carolina, (94) Maryland, * (4) Duke, * (42) Virginia , *(46) Miami, (56) NC State

Bas Losses – * (162) Clemson, (226) Boston College

Notes – FSU was very impressive dismantling NC State in Raleigh. The Noles are good enough to get to the Final 4 or Elite 8, but inconsistent enough to be a first round NCAA exit.

(42) Virginia (20-6) (7-5) Projected Seed 7

Last 10 – (6-4)

Good Wins – (74) Drexel, * (14) Michigan, (61) Oregon, (63) LSU, * (46) Miami, (56) NC State, (84) George Mason, (94) Maryland

Bad Losses – (107) TCU, (103) Virginia Tech, * (162) Clemson

Notes – A disappointing loss at Clemson was followed by 71-44 win against Maryland that saw the Cavs only give up 13 2nd half points. UVA is not out of the woods yet though. They have to play at a Virginia Tech team that they lost to already and against UNC this week.

Bubble But In

(46) Miami (16-9) (7-5) Projected Seed 12

Last 10 – (7-5)

Good Wins – (89) UMASS, (94) Maryland, * (4) Duke

Bad Losses – None

Notes – Miami is in the big dance today, but barely. They couldn’t get another signature win when they lost to UNC at home this past week. They have to play at Maryland then get FSU at home this week. Win both and Miami is a 7-8 seed, lose both and they are out.

Bubble But Out

(56) NC State (18-9) (7-5)

Last 10 – (6-4)

Good Wins – (51) Texas, (94) Maryland, (46) Miami

Bad Losses – * (172) Georgia Tech

Notes – NC State’s week could not have went worse. They blew a 20 point lead at Duke, then had a lifeless home performance against Florida State in a 14 point loss. To add insult to injury referee Karl Hess threw two NC State legends Chris Corchiani and Tom Gugliotta out of the game against FSU. Hey Karl I wouldn’t get near Raleigh anytime soon.

Only if they win the ACC Tournament

(94) Maryland (15-11) (5-7)

Last 10 – (3-7)

Good Wins – (73) Colorado, (37) Notre Dame

Bad Losses – None

Notes – Maryland has run out of time to make realistic run at the NCAA Tournament. A 27 point loss at Virginia was the final nail in the coffin.

(103) Virginia Tech (15-12) (4-8)

Last 10 – (4-6)

Good Wins – (42) Virginia

Bad Losses – * (159) Wake Forest, * (226) Boston College

Notes – Very quietly Virginia Tech has won 3 of their last 5, and that includes a last second win over Georgia Tech on Saturday.

(159) Wake Forest (12-15) (3-10)

Last 10 – (2-8)

Good Wins – (99) Loyola, MD

Bad Losses – (143) Richmond, * (187) Wofford, * (236) Arizona St. , * (162) Clemson, * (162) Clemson

Notes – Wake Forest avoided the ACC’s cellar by beating Georgia Tech on Tuesday. I’m still not sold on Jeff Bzdelik as head coach, not at all.

(162) Clemson (13-13) (5-7)

Last 10 – (4-6)

Good Wins – * (19) Florida State, (42) Virginia

Bad Losses – (115) Charleston, * (183) Coastal Carolina, * (180) South Carolina, * (147) UTEP, * (193) Hawaii, * (226) Boston College, (103) Virginia Tech

Notes – A good goal for Clemson is get to the NIT. They still have a shot at it, if they can finish over .500 for the season.

(172) Georgia Tech (9-17) (2-10)

Last 10 – (1-9)

Good Wins – (70) VCU, (56) NC State

Bad Losses – * (199) Tulane, * (228) Fordham, * (162) Clemson, (113) Mercer, (103) Virginia tech, * (159) Wake Forest

Notes – The Jackets have lost 7 games by 7 points or less. The Jackets just don’t know how to win games right now, and why can’t Glen Rice Jr. stay out of trouble?

(226) Boston College (8-19) (3-9)

Last 10 – (1-9)

Good Wins – *(19) Florida State

Bad Losses – * (167) Providence, (159) Wake Forest, *(171) Holy Cross, (133) Penn St, *(189) Boston U, *(265) Rhode Island, * (172) Georgia Tech, (103) Virginia Tech

Notes – If BC can finish the ACC season not in last place, I would consider the season a success for them. They have a 1 game lead on Georgia Tech.

Coming off a loss Tuesday night at Clemson, Virginia was looking a little shaky. Despite a 19-6 record they had fallen to 6-5 in the ACC with a dangerous Maryland team coming to Charlottesville. Frankly if the Cavs had lost Saturday that would be the NCAA bubble off in the horizon, but as he’s done all year Mike Scott carried Virginia. In this game Scott had 25 points and 7 rebounds in the impressive 71-44 victory over Maryland. The win keeps the Cavs in solid position for the NCAAs and a first round BYE in the ACC tournament.

Without Mike Scott this isn’t possible for Virginia. Without Mike Scott, UVA is probably 15-11 and not 20-6. Is there any doubt Mike Scott is your ACC player of the year? On twitter @HokieGuru, @KilroyFSU, and myself discussed this. We all agreed this is your ACC POY and probably deserves more credit than he’s getting. I don’t know what stronger endorsement of Scott you need than a Virginia Tech Hokie fan saying that.

Statistically speaking Mike Scott is third in the ACC scoring at 16.9 points a game. He’s in the top 10 in rebounding, and leads the ACC in FG percentage. Oh he’s also one of the ACC’s leading FT shooters at 81%, but Scott’s value is far more than that. Virginia is not a deep team. They haven’t been all year, but when starting center Assane Sene went down with what is now looking like a season ending ankle injury and Joe Harris suffered a broken bone in his non shooting hand you began to wonder if Virginia’s once promising season might slip away. Mike Scott wouldn’t let that happen and has literally carried the Cavaliers.

I know North Carolina’s Tyler Zeller is getting some mention as ACC POY. He’s having a great season, but he also has Harrison Barnes and John Henson there to free him up. Scott doesn’t have that luxury. He’s the defensive focus of every Virginia opponent, every game, and he still puts up the numbers he puts up. He gets no mention as National Player of the Year. He should be in the conversation. That’s a shame he’s not. Don’t agree with me then comment away, but if you don’t think he’s the ACC POY, I’d really like to know why. You can even do a fan vote for the ACC’s POY at the ACC’s official site and make your feelings known there.

The streak is 55 games and counting. 55 times Clemson has went to Chapel Hill and left with a loss to North Carolina. The Tigers have been trying since 1926 to win at Chapel Hill. To that put into perspective, let’s go over a few streaks that have happened 55 times or more.

Joe DiMaggio’s Major League Record hitting streak: 56 games

Orel Hershiser Major League Record: 59 consecutive scoreless innings pitched

Connecticut Women’s Basketball Team winning streak: 90 Games

UCLA Men’s Basketball Team winning streak: 88 Games

Butler’s Darnell Archery NCAA Consecutive Free Throw’s Made: 85

Yea that took me a fair amount of effort to find 5 streaks of any kind that were longer than Clemson’s losing streak to North Carolina in Chapel Hill. It would seem that in a year where Clemson is 13-12 (5-6) and North Carolina is 22-4 (9-2) that the chances of Clemson win are as remote as ever.

Seriously Clemson probably has as good a chance to beat North Carolina Saturday as an undrafted, twice cut Harvard grad does of becoming the starting PG of the New York Knicks… oh wait. Clemson has as good chance of beating North Carolina in Chapel Hill as the Butler Bulldogs have of going to back to back National Title games… Darn it.

Ok now I have one, Clemson has as good a chance of winning at Chapel Hill as Baylor does of beating Oklahoma. The Bears were 0-20 against the Sooners. This past year they beat Oklahoma. So you are saying there’s a chance? There’s always a chance. Clemson is going to have to try and force the Tar Heels to become a jump shooting team and the hope for the best. I’m pretty much thinking this streak is going to hit 56 Saturday. I don’t see how the Tigers can match with the Tar Heel’s impressive frontline.

Nope, just took a break last week due to a hectic schedule for me, but we’re back. Let’s get right to it.

Clemson pulled off surprising upset of Virginia Tuesday night, and Clemson Blog ShakinTheSouthland says that’s how you finish off a close basketball game. Keep an eye on Clemson come ACC Tournament time. That is a team capable of pulling off an upset or two.

NC State Blogger StateFansNation is glad to finally be taking a look in mid February at the Wolfpack’s chances at the NCAA tournament.

Do the North Carolina Tar Heels lack the Killer Instinct? asks UNC blog Keeping it Heel. I think it’s a fair question. I’m not sure anyone thinks the Tar Heels have reached their full potential.

We know Pittsburgh and Syracuse are joining the ACC eventually, but there’s a growing feeling that may be able to join as early as 2013. What does Syracuse blog NunesMagician think about that? Sounds like the Orangemen are ready to make the move. We’re ready to have Pitt and Syracuse in the ACC, and get this thing going.

DukeSportsBlog.com says the BlueDevils should be wary of their upcoming home game with NC State. That’s sound advice I’d say. The BlueDevils are in position for a NCAA tournament #1 seed, but have lost a couple of times in Durham this year. They can’t overlook a hungry Wolfpack team.

The Boston College football team has had quite a bit of staff turnover during the off-season. BCInterruption provides their thoughts on the moves.

I like to watch golf. I’m not every an every weekend golf fan, but I know the players. I normally watch the majors and some of the bigger golf events. I also tune in when Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are both in contention. Judging by Sunday’s TV ratings, which were CBS’s highest Pebble Beach ratings in 15 years; I wasn’t the only one watching either. Let’s face it Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods is still the rivalry we all want to see.

For years we’ve been searching for a rival to Tiger Woods. We thought it would be Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, maybe Padraig Harrington. We wanted to anoint Rory Mcilory as Tiger’s biggest challenger since he could walk but really it’s Phil Mickelson and it’s always been Phil Mickelson.

Now when history looks back Woods will have gotten the better of Mickelson. You can’t deny Woods 71 victories vs Mickelson’s now 40, or the 14-4 lead in majors, but the future Hall of Famer Mickelson is still the only player in the world outside of Woods that can move the golfing needle. Going into 2012 it seemed we might never see these golfing greats battle on a Sunday while both in contention.

Tiger’s issues have been well documented, from his knee issues, to his swing problems, to his personal life. He hadn’t won since 2009, and no I don’t count the 18 person exhibition he won in December. Phil had his wife’s and mother’s cancer to deal with. He had his own health to worry about, that being his arthritic condition. His own inconsistent game led us to believe his best days may be behind him.

In the Final Round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am we saw Phil Mickelson at his finest firing a scintillating 64 to win the event by two strokes, after starting the day six shots back. Mickelson wiped out his playing partner Woods by a whopping 11 shots, but they were in the 2nd to the last group and we wanted to see what happened.

Phil with his win confirms that when he is on he is still one of the best players on the planet, maybe the best. He’ll get a boost of confidence with the win, and I suspect he’ll contend if not win again heading into April’s Masters. There are signs Tiger’s game is finally coming around as well. At his last 3 sanctioned golf events he had a 3rd at the Australian Open in November, a T3 at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship and now T15 at Pebble Beach, where he was in the top 10 until late in the 4th round.

Woods will never be the dominating player he was a decade ago. That just won’t happen. He’ll never have the intimidation factor he once had, but if you keep putting yourself in position to win you’ll eventually breakthrough. Right now Tiger must still work out his mental issues. Basically he has to learn how to win again. When that happens Tiger can again be one of the 5 best players in the World, and who wouldn’t want to see more Phil and Tiger battles? I know I do.

How are things shaping with selection Sunday quickly approaching?

In my ranking system, any RPI top (100) win is a good win and any RPI top (50) obviously worth more. Any losses outside the RPI top (100) is considered a bad loss, and outside the RPI (150) are even more damaging. I’m not counting future results only if I think a team would make the NCAA’s if selections were made the day of the post.

My RPI rankings come from, CBSSportsline.com.

Locks

(4) Duke (21-4) (8-2) Projected Seed 1

Last 10 – (8-2)

Good Wins – (79) Belmont, * (3) Michigan St., (70) Davidson, * (15) Michigan, * (5) Kansas, * (30) Colorado St., (73) Washington, * (34) Virginia, (89) Maryland, (94) Virginia Tech, *(8) UNC, (89) Maryland

Bad Losses -None

Notes – Duke’s resume is unreal. Once you get past Syracuse, Kentucky and Missouri, explain how the Blue Devils aren’t a #1 seed if selections were today?

(8) North Carolina (21-4) (8-2) Projected Seed 2

Last 10 – (8-2)

Good Wins – * (3) Michigan St., * (24) Wisconsin, * (42) Long Beach St., * (48) Texas, * (37) Miami, (94) Virginia Tech, *(50) NC State, (89) Maryland, * (34) Virginia

Bad Losses – None

Notes – Had UNC beat Duke at home rather than blow a 10 point lead with under 3 minutes, they would have got my #1 seed vote instead of Duke.

(29) Florida State (17-7) (8-2) Projected Seed 7

Last 10 – (8-2)

Good Wins – (59) UCF, (70) UMASS, (94) Virginia Tech, * (8) North Carolina, (89) Maryland, * (4) Duke, * (34) Virginia , *(37) Miami

Bas Losses – * (177) Clemson, (219) Boston College

Notes – Inexcusable loss to BC costs Florida State 2-3 seeding positions this week.

(34) Virginia (19-5) (6-4) Projected Seed 9

Last 10 – (6-4)

Good Wins – (83) Drexel, * (15) Michigan, (64) Oregon, (76) LSU, * (37) Miami, * (50) NC State, (99) George Mason

Bad Losses – (108) TCU

Notes – I like Mike Scott and the Cavs team, but we are starting to see the limitations of this squad.

Bubble But In

(37) Miami (15-8) (6-4) Projected Seed 11

Last 10 – (6-4)

Good Wins – (70) UMASS, (89) Maryland, * (4) Duke, (94) Virginia Tech

Bad Losses – None

Notes – No shame in losing at Florida State, but the resume could use another signature win. North Carolina heads to Miami this week. A 4-2 ACC finish would get the Canes in the Big Dance, I believe.

(50) NC State (18-7) (7-3) Projected Seed 12

Last 10 – (7-3)

Good Wins – (48) Texas, (93) St. Bonaventure, (89) Maryland, (37) Miami

Bad Losses – (145) Georgia Tech

Notes – NC State plays at Duke then has Florida State at home. Wolfpack need a 1-1 week or they slip off the bubble.

Bubble But Out

NONE

Only if they win the ACC Tournament

(89) Maryland (14-10) (4-6)

Last 10 – (4-6)

Good Wins – (74) Colorado, (40) Notre Dame, (94) Virginia Tech

Bad Losses – None

Notes – I just can’t give the Terps a serious look until they get to .500 in the conference.

(94) Virginia Tech (14-11) (3-7)

Last 10 – (3-7)

Good Wins – (93) St. Bonaventure, (34) Virginia

Bad Losses – (146) Wake Forest, *(219) Boston College

Notes – Good discussion on twitter between myself @HokieGuru and @akosnitzky on twitter whether Seth Greenberg will make it through the season. We agreed he does, but his seat will be real hot next year.

(145) Georgia Tech (9-15) (2-8)

Last 10 – (2-8)

Good Wins – (84) VCU, (50) NC State, (98) Georgia

Bad Losses – * (182) Tulane, * (232) Fordham, * (177) Clemson, (101) Mercer

Notes – Loser of the Wake Forest\Georgia Tech game this week earns the right to be called the ACC’s worst team.

(146) Wake Forest (11-14) (2-9)

Last 10 – (1-9)

Good Wins – (80) Loyola, MD, (94) Virginia Tech

Bad Losses – (138) Richmond, * (190) Wofford, * (229) Arizona St. , * (177) Clemson, * (177) Clemson

Notes – I think we are at a point after nearly 2 seasons to ask what the heck is Jeff Bzdelik doing at Wake Forest?

(177) Clemson (12-12) (4-6)

Last 10 – (4-6)

Good Wins – * (29) Florida State

Bad Losses – (114) Charleston, * (184) Coastal Carolina, * (178) South Carolina, * (169) UTEP, * (203) Hawaii, * (219) Boston College

Notes – If Clemson had even 1 player that could consistently get to the basket they would be so much better.

(219) Boston College (8-17) (3-8)

Last 10 – (3-7)

Good Wins – (94) Virginia Tech, *(29) Florida State

Bad Losses – * (154) Providence, (146) Wake Forest, *(197) Holy Cross, (128) Penn St, *(169) Boston U, *(254) Rhode Island, * (145) Georgia Tech

Notes – Despite their overall record, Steve Donahue has the Eagles playing much better. A stunning win over Florida State was followed up by a last second loss at Virginia Tech, where Eagles outplayed the Hokies for much of the game.

In fact I pretty much don’t pay attention to the NBA until about May when the playoffs start. By that time the college basketball is over and the Masters has just finished. I actually enjoyed the Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat NBA Finals last year but the lock out pretty much killed any NBA interest I’d gained from the series.

I had Sportscenter in the background a few days ago and I’m hearing about this Jeremy Lin guy scoring 25 against the Nets, 28 against the Jazz, but I’m not really following the story. Then he goes for 38 against the LA Lakers and the Knicks start winning, and I found myself wanting to what was going on. Who was this Jeremy Lin? I’m looking for and reading stories about a player waived by two teams who’s suddenly taken the NBA by storm. This is ultimate underdog story and I’m on the bandwagon.

What’s going to be really interesting is if Lin can sustain his outstanding play when Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony. Who know’s, but Lin is making the NBA something it hasn’t been in awhile… fun.

The ACC’s reputation as a basketball conference is historically unmatched. In the last 25 years, no conference has more national titles or Final 4. That said the conference as a whole has fallen on some lean times when it comes to basketball. Yes the ACC has won 2 of the last 3 national titles, and 5 of the last 11, but still the perception is that the conference has struggled in recent years. I don’t disagree.

Duke and North Carolina have been top 10 mainstays, but the ACC has lacked quality depth that defined it for decades. I can remember years ago when the ACC would have 4 or 5 teams in the top 20, and a couple more NCAA worthy ones waiting in the wings. Every game was a war and the ACC Tournament might as well have been a de-facto Final 4. I’m here to tell you those days might not be that far off.

First off, the ACC cleaned house with a number of mediocre coaches. Sidney Lowe of NC State was replaced by Mark Gottfried who has the Wolfpack off and running to the tune of an 18-7 start. He recruited a 2012 class with 3 McDonald All-Americans. That’s the most of any team in the country. Paul Hewitt could never build on a 2004 Final 4 appearance at Georgia Tech and finally wore out his welcome. Brian Gregory inherited a team low on talent, but he also put together a solid 2012 class, that included top 30 National Player Robert Carter. Those aren’t the only strong classes being put together in the ACC.

Scout.com has 7 ACC teams ranked in their top 25 recruiting classes! No other conference has more than 5, but here is the truly amazing part. The 7 ACC teams with top 25 classes does not include Duke whose 1 person class is 5 Star prospect Rasheed Sulaimon the number 2 rated SG in the nation. When has Duke not been good under Coach K? It doesn’t include Syracuse or Pittsburgh either. Those incoming programs have the 11th and 15th rated 2012 classes. Even if neither program joins the conference until 2013, you can expect many of the 2012 players to still be there. Obviously Pitt and Syracuse have been historically great basketball programs. There’s more to it though…

This year there is no question that the bottom half of the ACC is not very good, but the top half features 4 top 25 teams (UNC, Duke, Virginia, and Florida State). Outside of that we’ve mentioned NC State, but newly hired Jim Larranaga at Miami has the Canes 15-7 and in position to get to the NCAAs for the first time since 2008. Oh yea they also won at Duke for the first time ever. Tony Bennett at Virginia has only guided the Cavaliers their best season since the 1980s so far. Florida State beat both North Carolina and Duke this year further proving the ACC is not just a two team conference.

If you happen to see the Duke\North Carolina Wednesday night, it was the first college basketball game of the season that literally took over Sportscenter. People were buzzing about that game in a way that I haven’t seen in a numbers of years for an ACC basketball game. With the incoming talent and the coaching turnover of last few years this may the last year anyone can say ACC basketball isn’t what it used to be.
