Three Ways we know you can talk playoffs, but don’t actually watch college football.

With the college football playoff just around the corner it’s becoming abundantly clear the people who like to talk about college football, but in fact, don’t watch college football. You could never come to these three conclusions if you actually paid any attention to the sport.

1. Florida State doesn’t make the playoff if they go undefeated

This sentiment was already gaining steam even before the Jordan Travis injury and has only ramped up since then. Look Travis is a FSU legend. His replacement QB Tate Rodemaker has big shoes to fill, but I don’t know with certainty that the Noles are a worse team until they lose a game. If the Noles win at Florida, and beat a the very least a 10-win top 15 Louisville the rest of their resume including the win over LSU, victory at currently ranked Clemson, and a win over ranked at the time Duke including victories over at least 6 bowl teams with the potential for 8 is more than sufficient for inclusion. The ACC currently sits 9-8 against the other P5 conferences and 8-5 against the SEC and the Big 10 proves that winning the ACC as an undefeated champions that you are one of the top 4 teams in the country.

2. Alabama gets in over Texas with the same record

This is borderline pure lunacy. The SEC has not distinguished OOC from actual game results. The conference is 5-7 against the rest of the P5, including 1-2 against the Big 12. Feel free to gauge relative conference strength with so-called advanced analytics, and I’ll just use head-to-head games played on the field. Sure Alabama deserves consideration should they beat Georgia but even if we aren’t using conference results  – um Texas beat Alabama by double digits in Tuscaloosa in a game that wasn’t that close. If head to head is not a tie-breaker then what are even doing here? Head to Head is used as a tie-breaker by just about every sport. Is Alabama better than Texas now? Possibly, but I don’t know for sure until they play. I do know who was better when they did play. People spouting this non-sense are just SEC apologists.

3. Michigan and Ohio State have a better resume than Washington

Pac 12 teams are 3-0 against Big 10 teams. Michigan quite literally didn’t play a single team with a pulse for 2 1/2 months until they went to Penn State and won by 9 points. The Wolverines then struggled to beat 6-5 Maryland. That’s 1 ranked win in nearly 3 months of football.  Ohio State is slightly better as they have a win at Notre Dame including a win over Penn State. Ok so does the team sitting in 7th place in the ACC Clemson. Louisville also beat Notre Dame – by double digits. So that win hardly resonates. Michigan and Ohio State have 3 combined ranked wins. Washington has 4 wins over teams that were ranked when they played them, and win over Arizona who is ranked now. The win over Oregon is better than any win Michigan or Ohio State has. Yet Washington remains behind both. Now you get an artificial 2 vs 3 matchup to add to the Michigan / Ohio State resume. I don’t even want to hear about the loser of that game getting playoff consideration barring upsets all over across the rest of the top 10.

Oh the Big 10 is also 5-8 against the rest of the P5.
