Brent Key quietly has Georgia Tech on track.

With so many ACC teams off to 4-0 starts, teams down the list can get lost in the shuffle.

Georgia Tech is one of those teams that has quietly shown improved play over last year, but with a 1-2 that didn’t yet show it.

Saturday Georgia Tech went to Wake Forest as an underdog with their season on the line. Yes, I think it was that big.

Given the Jacket’s brutal schedule that still has Miami, North Carolina, Clemson, Syracuse, and Georgia after already facing Louisville, Ole Miss, and a road game at previously 3-0 Wake Forest. The Jackets needed to pull a few upsets to get to a bowl game, which is the goal for this year’s Jackets.

Twice already this season Georgia Tech had chances in the 4th quarter to possibly beat Louisville and Ole Miss. Those were 1 score games later, and the Jackets simply didn’t make the plays needed to win.

Sitting at 1-2, there was a feeling if the Jackets didn’t win at Wake Forest, a bowl would likely be out of reach.

This is what I’ve liked about Brent Key even early in his Georgia Tech tenure. You see things get corrected.

QB Haynes King was considered a disappointment at Texas A&M with unusual mechanics. He’s been one of the ACC’s best QBs through the first quarter of the season. Even the decision to start King was met with a bit of skepticism as many expected Zack Pyron to be named the starter.

Kicker Gavin Stewart struggled to open the season. Key makes the switch to Aiden Birr and he connects on 6 of his first 7 FGs.

The defensive line had issues generating pressure on opposing QBs. Against Wake Forest, they had 8 sacks.

With a 1-3 Bowling Green next, Georgia Tech can’t afford to misfire on that game. P5 Bowl Teams don’t lose to 1-3 teams from the MAC. Lose there, and all gains from this past week will be lost.

The 2-2 start though makes the upcoming game meaningful and keeps Georgia Tech on track for a bowl game.
