The ACC’s three biggest men’s basketball questions for week of February 27, 2023

Who is going to win the ACC regular season title?

Despite the stunning home loss to Florida State, Miami still looks to be in the driver seat for the ACC Regular season title. They own head-to-head over Virginia and Clemson, and in the regular season, finale get Pittsburgh at home. Pittsburgh if they win at Notre Dame and Miami would be the ACCT’s #1 seed. I just can’t see Miami losing back-to-back home games.

How much trouble is Virginia in?

Virginia had a disastrous past week. They went 0-2 against Boston College and North Carolina and their offense looked really bad. The Hoos halfcourt offense will always be deliberate under Tony Bennett, but they could knock down perimeter 3s earlier in the year. Once averaging a little more than 70 points a game, it has dropped to barely 68 now. It was nearly 3 weeks ago when Virginia beat NC State 63-50. That was the last time Virginia looked like well Virginia. They face Clemson and Louisville at home this week, and Clemson in particular can beat Virginia if the Hoos play another sloppy game. We know what they are capable of when they are on their game, but right now there are several ACC teams playing better.

Should anyone feel NCAA safe after Miami and Virginia?

The ACC after Miami and Virginia probably has 6 more teams, Duke, Clemson, UNC, Pittsburgh, NC State, and Wake Forest with a realistic shot at an At-Large bid.

I think Duke is a virtual lock. Even if they lose to NC State and UNC I think they make the field. I like NC State’s position.  Nobody else better go winless for the week and needs at least a split of their games.

In the case of Wake Forest, they need a sweep of Boston College and Syracuse to even stay on the bubble.

So yeah the short version is ACC NCAA hopeful teams still have work to do.

Correction: Since the ACC has no tie breakers for naming the regular season champion, if Pitt wins against ND they will have locked at least a share of the regular season championship. Pitt has already defeated Miami once this year. Miami has to beat Pitt this Saturday just to earn a share the the regular season championship with Pitt. Should Miami upset Pitt, they would be co-regular season champions and tournament seeding will be determined by tie breakers based on Pitt’s and Miami’s record against the team finishing third. If they are still tied, then the records against the 4th place team is compared, and so on.
