It’s been a forgettable season of basketball for Louisville and Georgia Tech. Louisville is still on a trajectory to be the worst ACC team in at least 25 years, and most likely ever. The Cardinals have a mind-blowing NET ranking of 337 RPI Ranking of 319, and KenPom of 300 with a 2-19 (0-10) record.
We’ve never seen numbers like this from an ACC team. Even 2017-2018 winless in the ACC Pitt team and 2015-2016 winless in the ACC Boston College were roughly dozens of spots higher in the RPI and Ken Pom.
Georgia Tech is certainly not at the level of Louisville. At 7-13 (1-10) and a NET ranking of 216 RPI Ranking of 177, and KenPom of 196, they are a dumpster fire in their own right with metrics that rank among the ACC’s worst of the last 25 years.
At least in the last quarter-century, there’s never been a matchup quite like this as the two teams enter the game a combined 1-20 in the ACC and combined 10 straight ACC losses by double digits.
The numbers are astonishing and sad at the same time. Louisville is a blue-blood program with a national title in the last 10 years, and Georgia Tech with its own rich basketball tradition and only 2 years removed from an ACC Title have free fallen.
Exterior factors exist at both places from have set the wheels in motion for this historically bad matchup but at the end of the day, this is just an embarrassment to Louisville and Georgia Tech. It’s not just about bad coaching either, even though that’s an obvious big part of the problem.
Whether you are Louisville’s Kenny Payne or Georgia Tech’s Josh Pastner the losing coach of this game may not have another chance at an ACC win until they play again on February 25th.
Yes, we’re going to get this matchup twice – arguably the two worst ACC games in history.
If there is a worse one, I haven’t found it.
