The ACC’s three biggest questions of week 8.

Is Georgia Tech a Coastal Contender if they beat Virginia?

Georgia Tech already has a win at Pittsburgh and defeated Duke. What if they beat Virginia on Thursday to get to 4-3 (3-1) in Coastal? Can they be considered a true contender for the division? I think you have to say yes. North Carolina is leading the division and should be regarded as the favorite, but we know they aren’t an elite team, especially on defense. It’s a stretch to say Georgia Tech can actually end up in Charlotte, but if they can knock off the Hoos it becomes a possibility that has to be considered. By the way, a win and Brent Key matches Geoff Collins’s best season in 3 games.

Will Clemson’s defense play a complete game against a quality opponent like Syracuse?

To be a playoff-caliber team, Clemson needed QB DJ Uiagalelei to play at a high level. They got that, but it’s their defense frankly that I don’t trust. As talented as the unit is, it hasn’t played at the level I think it’s capable of. There have been health issues, and that’s part of the problem but I also think new DC Wes Goodwin hasn’t pressed the right buttons either. Clemson’s defense shouldn’t be ranked 30th in the country, and 5th in the ACC. Syracuse is a test with the talented RB Sean Tucker in the backfield and coming in ranked in the top 15. We will see if Clemson’s defense can play a 60-minute game.

What happens to Louisville if they lose to Pittsburgh?

How is this for a finishing kick for Louisville? Every team Louisville will play to finish the season is or has been ranked at one point or another this season including James Madison. Frankly Pittsburgh this week at home could be one the more winnable games remaining on the schedule. If Louisville loses to Pittsburgh, their bowl chances go to almost zero and with it the chances of Scott Satterfield returning. Pittsburgh will make a bowl game, but for them it’s pretty critical too. Their Coastal chances with a loss might be sunk before Halloween.
