It took Brent Key less than a week to improve Georgia Tech.

If I didn’t see it, I wouldn’t have believed it.

There wasn’t any doubt in my mind that a change in head coaches would improve Georgia Tech. Let’s just say Geoff Collins was limited in that department and I’ll leave it at that.

When Brent Key was named head coach, I was looking toward the game against Duke to start seeing improvement in the Yellow Jackets. Even then though, how much could it improve this year?

This was a team that was 1-3 and was a 20+ road underdog going to the home of the defending ACC Champion Pittsburgh. Georgia Tech’s last 4 games against FBS opponents they were outscored by nearly 150 points.

How Brent Key rallied and prepared his team after was astonishing in the 26-21 win over Pittsburgh.

Special Teams which had previously been a trainwreck was outstanding against Pitt. Gavin Stewart made 4 FGs, and they didn’t have a punt block. The maligned defense had 3 turnovers and held Pittsburgh to barely 100 yards rushing.

Georgia Tech on offense had 236 yards rushing.

Pittsburgh has a history of inexplicable wins and losses, but I thought they were past this kind of performance. They never matched Georgia Tech’s level of intensity in this game, and a Coastal Division that looked like Pitt’s to lose is wide open thanks to the Jacket’s upset win.

Where Georgia Tech goes from here is hard to say, but if they beat a much improved Duke team next week suddenly a bowl game possibility enters the picture.

Brent Key is your ACC coach of the week.
