We wrote here nearly 2 months ago, ESPN had several reasons to want to keep the ACC in tact.
As we correctly surmised, we now have confirmation from Burke Magnus, a top ESPN executive, as he detailed ESPN’s current and future relationship with the ACC.
You can take your twitter sources what ESPN will do with the ACC, and I’ll take the word straight from Mr. Magnus’s mouth in an excellent podcast interview from The Marchand and Ourand Sports Media Podcast.

So what did he say about the ACC?
The short version is Magnus said ESPN had “every incentive” to help raise the revenue of the ACC. He mentioned several possibilities for this mostly centering around increased content which could include a 9th ACC football conference game, and/or increased league games for basketball.
He also talked about the enormous investment ESPN made into the ACC Network. In our previous piece, we said how important this was for ESPN, and I think we still underestimated that investment by ESPN to build the ACC Network.
So we’ve had ACC leaders say they were optimistic ESPN would work with the ACC to raise revenue, and now ESPN’s #2 executive has made the same confirming statements.
Where before I was fairly confident ACC would get a restructured deal with ESPN, I am now more than 90% sure this will happen.
Judging by Magnus’s comments ESPN will be making a significant effort to help the ACC’s financials.
