Boston College
Boston College is the epitome of they are never that bad, but they are never really that good either. In 7 of the last 8 years, Boston College has won 6 or 7 games. Last season saw a 4-0 start before an injury to QB Phil Jurkovec derailed the season. It’s Jeff Hafley’s 3rd season as head coach, but BC playing in an Atlantic division that is one of the better ones in college football. How does Boston College break the ceiling to an 8+ win season? If the season is a mediocre one, do questions begin to arise about Hafley, who I think is a pretty solid coach?
Will Go 8-4 (5-3) if:
QB Phil Jurkovec stays healthy and the offensive line comes together. Boston College is simply a different team with Jurkovec under center, and he has weapons. RB Pat Garwo III and WR Zay Flowers are among the best in the ACC at their position. If a reconstructed offensive line can hold its own, then the offense should be pretty dynamic. The defense struggled against the run last season but has a chance to be pretty good, especially in the secondary. When looking at the schedule, if BC can get a split at Virginia Tech and at FSU early that’s likely a 3-1 start. Connecticut, Duke, and a home game with Syracuse should be 3 more wins. Then a couple of upsets and an 8-win season is not out of the question.
Will Go 5-7 (2-6) if:
Boston College can’t find some success on the road. Look at this road schedule for BC – at Virginia Tech, at Florida State, at Wake Forest, at Connecticut, at NC State, and at Notre Dame. I can scenario where Boston College loses 5 of those games, and then you’re an underdog to Clemson at home too. The offense line is brand new and you lost your best returning lineman Christian Mahogony to injury for the season. If it struggles, the Eagle offense even with good skill position talent could have problems generating points.
