Thoughts on Phil Steele’s 2022 Preseason All-ACC Team

We’ve taken a look and given our thoughts on Athlon’s 2022 Preseason All-ACC Team.

Now, how about thoughts on the recent release of Phil Steele’s 2022 Preseason All-ACC Team.

Did we come to the same conclusions as we did with Athlon’s All-ACC Team ?

  1. Steele has 13 NC State players on his ACC teams. That is pretty impressive. If you are sleeping on NC State then you aren’t paying attention. The fact their All-ACC representatives are split pretty evenly on offense and defense gives them a balance not seen from recent non-Clemson ACC pre-season contenders. If you are looking for a darkhorse playoff candidate, look to Raleigh. I’ll go into more detail with a post on this later
  2. Another Preseason All-ACC team without a 1st or 2nd team player from Georgia Tech. You do the math for Geoff Collins.
  3. I continue to be amazed by the depth at QB in the ACC. Virginia’s Brennan Armstrong is a 4th team All-ACC pick behind Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke, NC State’s Devin Leary, and Wake Forest’s Sam Hartman. These four have been interchangeable on All-ACC lists, and we haven’t even got to players like Louisville’s Malik Cunningham or Boston College’s Phil Jurkovec. If there’s a league deeper at QB I’d like to see it.
  4. Um how did Clemson’s Tyler Davis not land on any of the four All-ACC teams? He was a first-team All-ACC pick last year while injured. Do I have to ask what was Steele thinking here?
  5. If you are just going by All-ACC pre-season lists it sure does look like it’s Clemson and NC State in the Atlantic with Wake Forest in the mix, and Pittsburgh and Miami as the favorites in the Coastal. I know Josh Downs is still at UNC, but their moment appears to have passed going into the season.
