Virginia Tech Men’s Basketball: A Word of Caution on Guard Play

Good afternoon, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.

Virginia Tech had its first ACC men’s basketball game at home today vs. Wake Forest.  The Hokies absolutely got blow out – and it was never close.

Let’s be clear here:  Virginia Tech permitted the Demon Deacons to shoot 66% from the field.  Shooting 75% from inside the three point line.  This was really bad defense.  Wake Forest shot 75% in the 2nd half – and forced 12 Hokies’ turnovers.

Virginia Tech doesn’t have the guard play required to compete in the upper half of the ACC.  The Hokies’ guards are small and, quite frankly, don’t have the size to play against some of the trees in the ACC.  If I’m Florida State, Syracuse, Duke, North Carolina – I would make sure that I called one-on-one plays or post-up plays vs. the Hokies  guards as often as possible (like every possession down the court).

I mentioned this on Twitter and got a decent reply from @Vick757:

I’m also not taking away from Wake Forest here.  Credit Steve Forbes for putting together a good roster. Wake Forest was more physical and aggressive – and they wanted this game more.

Mike Young is going to have to hit the transfer portal – or the DMV recruiting connections to bring in some bigger guards to compete in the ACC.  In the interim, Young has to put players on the court who will play better defense because this seemed like a practice session rather than an ACC opener.  This version of Virginia Tech is going to have to change pretty quick with road games at North Carolina, Duke, Dayton – and a neutral site contest with St. Bonaventure.  We are all still fans of this team and Mike Young – but some adjustments need to be made pretty quickly.
