If Georgia Tech doesn’t make staff changes they’ve quit on football.

The story of Georgia Tech’s football season has been written. With top 15 teams Notre Dame, and Georgia left on the schedule, Georgia Tech will not be winning another game. Today’s 38-30 loss to Boston College marked Georgia Tech’s last realistic opportunity to win a game. That means the Jackets will win just 3 games for the 3rd straight year. It is the worst stretch of Georgia Tech football since they won just 8 games in 1980-1982. Even then Georgia Tech had a top 5 win over Alabama in 1981, which far exceeds anything Geoff Collins has done.

Collins and his apologists may try to sell fans progress, but smart football fans know better. Progress is measured in wins only, and 3 wins in year 3 is the same as year 1.

If you are a Georgia Tech fan, unfortunately, you have to accept that Collins will be back next year. A ridiculous 7  year deal, makes it nearly impossible for cash strapped Georgia Tech to let go of Collins. Like it or not he’ll be back.

What AD Todd Stansbury can do is force Collins to make some staff changes on the defensive side of the ball. They probably should be made on offense too, but better to go with the more dysfunctional group. Georgia Tech’s is now ranked somewhere in 100s and sinking after giving up over 500 yards and 41 points to BC in their latest defense meltdown.

Defensive Coordinator Andrew Thacker is woefully underqualified to be a Power 5 DC. Only 36 years old, he’s never held a DC position at a power 5 school, and just one year as DC at all. That would be at Temple in 2018. He could be a fine coach one day, but at the moment he is in over his head.

Certainly Geoff Collins would like to retain a staff member he brought with him from Temple. I imagine they are pretty good friends, but Collins has to make a move that shows he recognizes that’s something is rotten in Atlanta.

If he doesn’t and AD Todd Stansbury allows nothing to happen, then Georgia Tech has basically given up on football for the foreseeable future.
