First Quarter of season: the Good, the Bad, and the Clemson Offense of ACC Football.

The first quarter of the college football season is already behind us. It sure does fly. It’s been a rough go for the ACC, but there have been some positives. We’ll call it the good, the bad, and the Clemson Offense.

The Good

Boston College and Wake Forest are undefeated at 4-0. Wake Forest is ranked in the top 25, and Boston College should have been after a stirring win over Missouri. That’s called taking care of business.

Louisville, NC State, Georgia Tech, Syracuse, and Duke took some early season losses that could have sent their seasons spiraling out of control.

All have improved immensely since weeks 1 and 2. Louisville’s win over UCF might be the ACC’s best OOC win of the season. NC State sent Clemson to their first ACC loss in years. Georgia Tech trounced a ranked UNC team. Syracuse coming off a 1 win season is 3-1 with a nice win over Liberty. Duke is the only ACC team with two Power 5 wins. Watch for these teams in the second half.

I bet you didn’t know the ACC is 2-1 against the SEC East, thanks Boston College’s win over Missouri, and Pittsburgh beating Tennessee. The only loss is Clemson to Georgia. OK this is a reach, but still counts right?

The Bad

Florida State is the worst team in the ACC, and it’s not close at 0-4. The last second loss to Jacksonville State seems to have broke this team. They could be looking at a 2 win or fewer season.

Virginia’s defense is absolutely atrocious. At one point between UNC and Wake Forest games, the Hoos defense gave up a score in more than 15 straight drives.

Clemson, UNC, and Miami started the year in top 5. Clemson is still ranked based only on reputation and the three have 6 combined losses before the leaves change.

The ACC is very likely to be left out of the playoff this year with Clemson’s demise and no other truly dominant team. Wake Forest and Boston College are still mathematically possible, but they are so far back in the rankings.

The Ugly

Clemson’s offense.

The ugly is reserved for the most disappointing unit in college football. QB DJ Uiagalelei got darkhorse heisman buzz in the pre-season. He’s looked rattled, inaccurate, and confused in every game against a Power 5 opponent.

The offensive line is a trainwreck.

The schemes have been called bland, archaic, with a lack of imagination.

The receivers and running backs have made few if any game changing plays when they’ve had their opportunities.

If there’s been a positive about this this unit, I can’t find it. There’s a lot of blame to go around here.
