Who is the must-see offensive player in 2021 ACC football?

There are plenty of good candidates for the must-see offensive player of the year in ACC football, but the nuance about “must-see” is that it is more subjective, whereas the “best” or “most important” player is (while somewhat subjective) a narrower and more demanding category.

Picking the best player elicits more of a sense of responsibility from the person making that choice. It’s a weighty designation. If a player is — or isn’t — the best player in a conference, it’s important for the writer or commentator to at least offer a credible defense of his or her selection. Failing to do so fails to honor the effort and performance it took for a player to become the very best.

A “must-see” player is much more fun and light. It doesn’t convey the seriousness of a best player or MVP award. This is much more in the realm of personal preference.

While North Carolina’s Sam Howell might be the best quarterback in the conference, and while Zonovan Knight of North Carolina State might be the most important offensive player in the 2021 ACC, Miami’s D’Eriq King is my must-see offensive player this year. He is dazzling, he has late-game chops, and he will be asked to carry the Hurricanes this season, which makes his own story more compelling and makes Miami’s season powerfully tied to his own achievements. He will be the central figure in every Miami game. He will shape the ACC Coastal race and the Canes’ evolving battle with UNC for the Coastal crown. If Miami wins the Coastal, King will be the main reason Miami can upset Clemson in the ACC Championship Game.

He is the player I can’t lose track of if I want to see how the 2021 ACC season unfolds.
