Louisville
As surprising as Louisville’s 2019 season was in a good way, the 2020 season was just the opposite. Several 2020 pre-season polls had Louisville ranked, but a 1-4 started sunk the season on the way to a 4-7 (3-7) year. Scott Satterfield’s off-season dalliances with other college football openings eroded Cardinal fans trust in him. What looked like a HR hire Satterfield is now met with soem skepticism and concern. Satterfield in his year 3rd now, has a lot to prove. Clemson is further out of reach than ever, and Boston College and NC State flew past the Cards in 2020 in the Atlantic Division.
Will Go 8-4 (5-3) if:
The Cardinals can’t cut down on the turnovers. Louisville was -12, 119th in the nation in turnover margin. In a 2020 season that saw Louisville lose 4 single digit games, turnover improvement can flip at least half those games. QB Malik Cunningham is a talented dual-threat player, that can lift an offense. He’ll need to with stars RB Javian Hawkins and WRs Tutu Atwell and Dez Fitzpatrick gone, but Satterfield has had past success putting together pretty potent offenses. If Louisville can start the season 3-1 by taking 2 of 3 from Ole Miss, UCF, and at FSU, the Cards can get on a roll. Only Clemson is likely a sure loss, the 2nd half of the season.
Will Go 4-8 (3-5) if:
QB Malik Cunningham struggles with taking over the offense. We’ve already mentioned all the offensive production that departed Louisville. It’s Cunningham’s offense now, and if he can’t step up the Cards will have big issues. He had 15 turnovers last year, and he can’t repeat that. The start of the schedule is could send the season sideways fast. In Louisville’s first 9 games, only Eastern Kentucky is a near certain win, and the season ender Kentucky is no gimme either. It’s not out of the question Louisville has back to back 4 win seasons, and doubts will really start with Scott Satterfield.
